Magic up Everywhere in this Piece

Last week, Graham went down to Seattle (to represent Canada it seems), at the Magic: the Gathering Online Community Cup. James, Jeremy and Alex went with him to coach, document and cheer on. The Community Team was successful and defeated the team from Wizards of the Coast. Those videos will be going up over the coming week or so. But prior to their trip, Jeremy ran Graham through his paces to make sure he was as ready as possible.

Here’s the video evidence.

First, Graham and Jer cracked open a bunch of New Phyrexia boosters to go over the best pick order for a draft:

Then, taking that information into the real world, they tried out a draft at YellowJacket, the local card shop (which went very well!):

And of course, since the event will be played in the MTGO environment, some actual, internet drafts (which went poorly!):

Now that the crew is back from Seattle, and the Calgary Entertainment Expo, here are the first two video updates from the road:

  1. I wish you would mention a few credits for the background SIDs you use. The first one in the first video is from a very famous demo, Oneder by Oxyron.

A single 59 kilobyte Commodore executable, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kssXXkELnRk The track used starts after 5:40, but all the music is awesome in that demo. 🙂

  2. I’ll be completely honest with you for a moment. If LRR became nothing but First Pick, forever, I would watch it. Magic is awesome, but having it presented in such a casual format actually makes it entertain to watch too. Please more draft vids, and more CC vids asap. Thanks

  3. Silly question I know but do you see a difference between paper Magic and online? I always get the impression that online is deliberately trying to mess me up when it comes to drawing and shuffling. The paper seems a lot more friendly to me.

  4. The Captain should feature in some LRR sketches.

  5. Have to say I like the sound of HyperCube. May try that with my mountain of cards from 7 years ago at some point.

  6. ARGGHH, If when the captain asked what the guys name was who was to be the “Demo Man”, if he responded with Tavish DeGroot, I’d be happy for a billion years.

  7. I have actually ridden the Ducks of Branson, and it was a lot of fun. They played the same soundbite from Back to the Future. Notably different in that our captain didn’t say “Oh, My Gosh” even once.

  8. I know I’m way late to finally get around to watching these, but I can’t believe you didn’t Volt Charge the Death-Hood Cobra. It would have protected your win-con and either forced HIM to chump-block with his Crusader, or put you in a race where you have four turns of blocking and he has zero.

Tempo is one of the hardest things to learn, and I still struggle with it at times, but it was painful to see the fear of his guy overtake you while you had the win on the table.

(That opponent himself made a mistake there by giving deathtouch before blocking, thus telegraphing his plan. You should have seen the situation and Volt Charged first, but as I say that’s not always easy.)

Anyway, much appreciation for the videos and congrats on the CC, now off to watch the rest.
