Leaving The Escapist
March 25th, 2015

Right off the bat, the takeaway from this post is that starting in April, we will no longer be posting content to The Escapist Magazine. The final episode of Unskippable will air on March 30th, and while Feed Dump will continue here and on our own YouTube channel, the last one to air on The Escapist will land on April 1st. No, it’s not an April Fools joke!

If you’d like to know why, read on, because we’d be happy to tell you! We’ve always been super open about stuff like this, and we’re not planning to stop now 🙂

The Escapist came to us and said that Unskippable was not getting the kind of viewership they needed to continue the show. We could either continue the show for less money, or end it. It’s not feasible for us to do Unskippable at a lower rate, so we’ve decided to end the show. The Escapist did ask if we’d consider pitching them a new show, but that’s not something we’re interested in right now. To answer the inevitable question: the Unskippable property is owned by The Escapist’s parent company, and we are unable to continue it independently.

Further, we don’t think it really makes sense for Feed Dump to continue on The Escapist, so we won’t be cross-posting it there anymore. In contrast, we own Feed Dump, so for clarification: Feed Dump is not stopping, we’ll just keep posting it to our own site and YouTube, as we’ve been doing this whole time.

To note: Since we’re not being paid for it anymore, Feed Dump will be added to the bulging list of content that is supported directly by you, on our Patreon. We believe this will all work out fine and (as always!) we hugely appreciate any and all support.

The first episode of Unskippable aired Nov 19th, 2008. Over six years ago! The final episode will be #326. It’s been an amazing ride. Winning The Escapist’s film festival and landing Unskippable was largely responsible for helping us grow into the company we are now. We wouldn’t be where we are without the support of The E in those early days. So this brings us a mixture of weird feelings, but change happens, and it’s time to move on.

Personally, I want to thank everyone in Durham we worked with during the last six years, and all the other wonderful staff we got to meet at The eXpo. Sorry for all the late uploads >_<

So long, and thanks for all the imps.

  1. Well I’m sad to hear you guys will be leaving the Escapist, but I’m not at all worried about you guys continuing your content. It just means I’ll have to come somewhere else for it. 🙂 I wish you all the best on the transition!

  2. A shame it was not getting the viewership that was required – it seems just the sort of thing the Internet should love – but oh well. I guess there’s always the streams.

  3. I will miss Unskippable, shame it has to end, but just like in TNG “All good things…” I will continue to watch on youtube, and enjoy you there.

  4. Is there a chance of a Checkpoint+ situation arising where you guys decide to make a new show similar to Unskipable or do you guys plan on using the new time to work on other projects?

    Comment by Zach Z — March 27, 2015 @ 3:17 pm

  5. Unskippable got fewer views because the Escapist fired the big names who worked their and the website started getting far fewer views. So sad. Not long ago, they had enough celebrities working for them to make a whole convention. Now the only one left is Yahtzee.

  6. Can I request that you do Edgey McEdgerson’s Hedge Edger for the last unskippable? 😀

  7. Just heard the news now– very sad, but not unexpected, what with the way things have been going over there. Long live LRR!

  8. Well, I guess I’ll just watch your stuff here on your own site then. Too bad about you being unable to keep doing Unskippable as that was what brought you guys to my attention in the first place, and quite frankly a poor decision (among many poor decisions lately) by Escapist in my opinion.

Really, there’s less and less reason to keep going to The Escapist these days. With you guys gone Yahtzee is about the only thing they have left.

Looking forward to future awesomeness from the LRR crew!

  9. I’m sorry that this association is ending, but at the same time I’m glad because of the weird mismanagement that’s been going on with that site and the parent company. I’m definitely keeping my eyes peeled for the last one, though.

  10. It was a good run. I guess we can hope the series revives elsewhere. Thanks for not only the laughs there, but a lead-in to all the other awesome things you do.

  11. The Unskippable pilot introduced me to LRR. Can’t believe it has been six years… Sad to see the show go, but I know you have more good stuff in store for us. Here is to your community-funded, independent future!

    Comment by GSC — March 30, 2015 @ 6:44 pm

  12. And I thus no longer have any reason to visit the Escapist. This was the only show left that I was watching.

Thank you for an entertaining six years.

  13. Yet another reason to not go on the escapist anymore. At least, I am glad it introduced me to you guys. Looking forward to what you will be doing next!

  14. Jim, Moviebob and now the LLR crew. I look forward to all your future work you guys do, just sucks that i have to check a dozen different pages these days instead of just one. Time to start a Unskippable marathon before escpaists completely buries all those fantastic videos.

  15. Eh, you guys are burnt out anyway. The shtick is tired. That’s why PA dropped you. Thanks for the years of reading the news at me. Enjoy the undeserved Patreon cash. You won’t be missed.

  16. Well that makes it official loadingreadyrun.com will be replacing the Escapist in my permanently open tabs.

What the heck is going on at the Escapist?

    Comment by J — April 2, 2015 @ 1:39 am

  17. So, Escapist has, like, one show left? Damn.

I hope they continue to host the old content (I re-watch things like the Dumps and Daily Drop when I’m waiting for something else to load. Especially Daily Drop, those never get old.)

    @Inevitable Obvious troll is obvious.

  18. Here’s a question I have, what about desert bus?

    Comment by Tom — April 8, 2015 @ 6:55 pm

  19. Sorry to hear about this, but I saw the writing on the wall when Moviebob went the way of Jim Sterling. It is my firmly held belief that the only reason Yahtzee is still on the escapist is because he is the only thing driving veiwership anymore. And with the rest of the site floundering like it is, he won’t be there long. Yet another boneheaded move by people too mired in self-delusion to see what’s really happening.

In better tidings, you want to know why the LRR fanbase is my favorite community on the web? Because they are the nicest people ever. All of these comments and only one troll so far (and that may have been an april fools joke)

Keep up the great work guys! The big E may have introduced me to LRR, but I will follow LRR long after that big boat made of money has run aground!

  20. You made me laugh out loud so many times today, way to go out on a high note. I thought you had great quality through the entire run.

    Comment by Noumenon72 — April 20, 2015 @ 1:09 am

  21. I know quite a few people are expressing their grief over Unskippable ending, but I really want to express my deep joy that Feed Dump is still continuing. I’ve been thrilled with FD’s direction this past year, as it becomes increasingly surreal and existentially terrifying, so I’m ecstatic to see it continue. I’m not really surprised with the official cutting of ties to the Escapist, given that LRR has largely been its own entity independent of the Escapist for well over a year now. Still, I hope the best for the Patreon, and as soon as I get my personal finances stabilized, it’s my number-one priority to donate to (sorry that I haven’t contributed yet). Keep on rolling, lrr and lrr-fans. You guys are awesome, and I wish the best.

  26. This actually like… This actually upsets me. I wish I had the sort of money that I could buy the Unskippable property from the parent company and just give it to you guys.

Seriously, Unskippable was the only show I actually enjoyed from you guys. Because I enjoy the sort of RiffTrax or Retsupurae stuff. Do you know if they’ll ever be giving up the Unskippable property?
