Re: TTC 121 - Shadows Over Innistrad Spoilers Part 2

In response to Cam's comment about the evolution of Gothic Horror into Cosmic Horror: Genre evolution with a focus on Horror, Science Fiction, and Cosmic Horror is my area of research I am attempting to get a PHD in. There are a number of references and articles I could pull about the transition of...

Re: Fight the Future 17 - Enders Game

One of the more interesting artifacts of adapting a novel told by an omniscient narrator to a film is the introduced ambiguity in characterization. We no longer know why Ender does things unless he specifically tells someone. That's quite wonderful. In the book Ender tells us he destroys the Bugger ...

Re: TTC 106 - Mailbag Episode 4

One block does not make a type, subtype, or archetype relevant. Having good cards that interact with them makes a type, subtype, or archetype relevant. Falkenrath Aristocrat, Xathrid Necromancer, and Champion of the Parish all interact with humans and are powerful cards within their strategies, maki...

Re: TTC 106 - Mailbag Episode 4

Sure. And because it was relevant in Innistrad, it is relevant in Highlander. Because artifacts were relevant in Mirrodin, they are relevant in Highlander. Because Fairies were relevant in Lorwyn, they are relevant in Highlander. Just because there isn't a deck in standard right now doesn't mean tha...

Re: LRRcast - Workplace Accidents

I wouldn't correct Alex on the sphere/ball thing because it doesn't impede my understanding of his statement. It's a distinction that is meaningful in a few small applications and for almost every other the two terms, while distinct, clearly community the same message.

Human is a relevant subtype to both Falkenrath Aristocrat and Champion of the Parish, which are Highlander staples.

No, it says all instants and sorceries have Storm.

I actually really want my card to be real.

My New-ish "Pauper" Commander Deck

Hi everyone! I mentioned recently that I had built a pseudo-pauper Commander deck using only commons, including the Commander (as opposed to "real" Pauper where the Commander is an uncommon creature with no Legendary sub-type requirement). It's led by Ramirez DePietro, and is based around ...

Re: Female Characters

I want to give a detailed, lucid response, but I honestly don't think it would do any good. CulturalGeekGirl and others have been doing just that for pages and have been either ignored, accused of being offensive, or had their own arguments explained back to them. This is such a perfect model of the...

I am happy to continue playing XCOM until I have completed it on Impossible / Iron Man. After that, I'd like to play Alpha Centauri, or Civilization V, or maybe Deus Ex: Human Revolution as a palette cleanser until Alien: Isolation launches. Then ... then there will be Space Hulk. http://www.rockpap...

Then I'm not exactly sure what you want from the technology; this is exactly what's being alluded to in the video you posted. I understand that solar energy is being used to drive the reaction. Nowhere did I say that it was generating energy from nothing. The point is that this carries out the react...

Re: Global Warming and You!

Not necessarily. I've attended lectures where researchers have found novel and relatively low-energy reactions for synthesizing alcohols and long-chain hydrocarbons from CO2 and water, but these reactions generally require platinum group metals for catalysis. It's a longshot but depending on how ast...

Re: Rest in Peace, Ray Bradbury.

The Paris Review posted a Bradbury interview that they began in the 1970s, abandoned, then rediscovered and finished in 2009. Best line? "I’m glad you’re back in the world. You have a different face, a different name, but the soul shining out of your face is the same ... welcome back." htt...

Re: Mining in Space!

What makes planetary resources' asteroid volatile mining brilliant is that you don't need to bring any of it up out of a meaningful gravity well. Water isn't compressible, weighs a tonne, and in flat out necessary for human space travel, which is a nasty combination when everything costs $$$ to brin...

Everything I've read about this makes it sound like it could absolutely work. I'm not an astronomer so I can't really comment on how common nickel-iron asteroids are, but as a chemist I can tell you that a new source of platinum-group metals will be revolutionary. Just thinking about how this will d...

I really don't even think they deserve "a gentle spanking". What for, exactly? Not telling the story you wanted to be told? I wasn't satisfied with the very very end to BSG, but I didn't threaten economic ruin on Ron Moore if it wasn't changed according to my specifications. At some point ...

I suppose this could easily stray into a conversation about our definition of art, and I'm not really certain that I'm qualified to discuss that. I think it's worth pointing out that faster-than-light drives still exist, so intra-cluster travel is still possible, but relatively lengthy -- weeks or months instead of moments. I think there was also an ANN story just before the game launched mentioning research into Calabi-Yau Manifolds, which c...
