General site craziness

Postby Metcarfre » 15 Aug 2011, 20:02

Don't know about anyone else, but I'm getting loads of errors on the site of late. Sometimes I'll click on a thread, and it asks me if I want to open a text file. Other times I get a "Fatal Error: out of memory" message.

I'll update with specific incidents as they occur. This happening to anyone else?

I've been getting the memory errors a bit as well. None yet today, but quite a few last night.

I got a couple for a couple seconds a bit ago. I just assumed it was a one-off thing. Apparently not.

I had a few errors similar to that yesterday, although I don't recall the exact wording and a couple refreshes got it working again.

Getting them pretty frequently, including just white-screens in general.

It happens to me a lot, and takes on 3 different forms - White screen, Memory allocation failure, and "Error: Empty response". I presume this is an issue with the host itself, perhaps a bad PHP/Apache install, or a general lack of available memory.

Hate to say this right after a hosting change, but Paul might want to consider swapping hosts (or upgrading the plan).

That's weird, I haven't seen any of these.
Since I know Paul and I use the same OS and browser, he probably hasn't either.
I'll let him know.

I'll just chime in and say I saw a couple memory allocation errors some time last night too. I can't speak for any of the other errors but these were definitely server side. I'll try to take note of the time if I see them again (unless the issue is already known and fixed), in case there is some cron job running around that time sucking up all the memory.

Thanks for the bug reports, guys. Like Graham said, we are not seeing the errors you are talking about and the server isn't under the kind of load that would result in memory errors, so I'm not sure what the issue is. Is it happening just on the forums, or is it everywhere on the site? If it happens again, please take a screenshot and either post it in this thread or email it to me ([email protected]).

Thanks!

Hi all. I've just been made aware of the issue.

From your descriptions, it sounds like it might just be the memory allocation for PHP being too low. I've increased it, so hopefully that will fix any problems.

What I can tell you is that the server hardware/bandwidth isn't the issue as there are more than enough resources available. It's probably just a setting somewhere that isn't taking full advantage said resources.

If you continue to experience these problems, please (as Paul says) post a screenshot or copy-paste all of the error text that the page displays. That will help me to track down the problem.

Hi Ashton!

Well, I haven't had any problems yet, but I shall keep you appraised.

I just got the error again after clicking on the button to go from the home page to the forum. Refreshed and it worked fine, and then I tested it again and got the error again. Screenshot is below, but in case that's too small to read, it says:
Fatal Error: Out of memory (allocated 18874368) (tried to allocate 122880 bytes) in /home/loadingr/public_html/blog/wp-content/plugins/nextgen-gallery/lib/shortcodes.php on line 127

Edit: got it three more times, one when posting and one when trying to come to this forum to post about it, and one when trying to preview this post. Errors said:
Fatal error: Out of memory (allocated 1572864) (tried to allocate 1966080 bytes) in /home/loadingr/public_html/forum/posting.php on line 1310
Fatal error: Out of memory (allocated 2883584) (tried to allocate 30720 bytes) in /home/loadingr/public_html/forum/includes/functions.php on line 1017

Just happened to me 4 times. Links to screenshots below.
http://mg.lrrcraft.com/LRRnoworky1.jpg
http://mg.lrrcraft.com/LRRnoworky2.jpg
Other times just have differing numbers of bytes.

EDIT: And as I was posting this, ran into the blank white screen twice.

EDIT2: And once with that edit, as well as once so far with this edit.

EDIT3: One more for the above edit, will I be lucky this time? (for reference, happening either when I hit the edit button, submit button, or return to last topic button).

I've tweaked a large number of Apache settings, as well as general memory settings. I think I've got it this time (famous last words, right?)

Let me know if you encounter any more of these errors. Also let me know if you DON'T encounter any after a suitable period of time, so that we can put this to bed =)

I've been monitoring the server for the past 15 hours or so and I haven't noticed any problems. Looks like it might be fixed =)

Thank you all for your reports! It really helps with the diagnosis and repair of server issues.

metcarfre: Hopefully it's an isolated incident. Let me know if it happens again, as well as the time that it happened and which timezone you're in, and I'll check the logs.
