SpaMEGAdon II: The Spammening
Re: SpaMEGAdon II: The Spammening
In retrospect, we should probably have deputized some non-north americans in our epic spam-posse, but oh well, we'll know for next time.
For now, Met, Alex, thank you SO much for taking this on.
You guys are life savers.
And everyone else, thanks for being so patient and understanding, and reporting the troublemakers.
Wall Plaid for all.

The plaid I used was my family's hunting tartan... but sure that's nice too, I guess.

OF COURSE! Why did I not think to NOT check Andre (lolfrench) and try Barlow. Still nope. Closest I get with Andre is St Andrews.
Guess it's 'kay.

Since when does the wiggins name have a tartan? ಠ_ಠ
The name isn't Scottish, like, at all.

But the one you posted is a "family hunting tartan"? Huh. So, just one that's commonly used? ಠ_ಠ
Re: SpaMEGAdon II: The Spammening
It's the MacMillan tartan. Mother's side is Scottish.

Re: SpaMEGAdon II: The Spammening
Of course! I had to do some further digging, but the closest Barlow (Mother's side) gets is Irish that "kind of migrated through Scotland, England, then Australia", while Andre (Father's side) is pretty much straight up French, with a little German.
I'm basically the personification of Europe.
Also, this is insane now! It's not just new threads, but old/outdated threads and currently popular ones getting barraged with spam.. This is... New.

I'm still reporting them here & there. It's difficult at times not to post a snarky comment to them, but I am still resisting.

Keep resisting. When I ban them, I just delete all their posts, which means your snarky comments will just be left littering the forums with no context. It's really much less work for us if you don't post anything to them.
Also I suspect (though I have no confirmation for this) that they may return to check how many views their threads get, and the more views they get may encourage spammers to come back.

Might as well let them keep it, they did a good job in the crew's absence.

Re: SpaMEGAdon II: The Spammening
I'd like a little more of an understanding of how the system works if that's so. Because I ban/delete posts through the ACP, they usually aren't logged, but going the other way takes twice to four times as long...

Re: SpaMEGAdon II: The Spammening
I wanna bring something up, as far as spam goes.
On the Wiki, we've had a few straggler spammers appear. The CAPTCHA is working wonders, but on the other hand, one in 2^12 spammers might get through by picking all twelve images right. Maybe that's where it's coming from, but it might also be a human.
A comprehensive CAPTCHA for the forums is, at this point, a necessity.

Re: SpaMEGAdon II: The Spammening
My bet is that the bots are actually being logged in by human beings. The DBfH spam attack seemed very deliberate; someone was smart enough to know that it would be a time the LRR page would have a higher than average number of visitors and lower than average moderation.
I don't think they're bots at signup. Pure speculation, but still. They're being signed in through human beings, making CAPTCHA systems an annoyance at most for them (mind you, making it more annoying is possibly not a terrible idea; you need to hit that sweet spot: Not so annoying that it'll deter an actual visitor who only has to sign up once, but a pain in the ass for a spammer who needs to sign up over and over again.) The way to win is more moderators who can spot the spam and delete it as fast as possible, making us an unattractive target. (To my mind, anyway.)

Quick, everyone to the Bunker! Repent! It is the End Times! (They even infiltrated the Graham & Kathleen Engagement/Mayo/Cheese/Egg thread. THIS WILL NOT STAND.)
