Depending on the version of PHPBB that Paul is using to power this board, I've had some success in the past with Anti-Spam ACP (http://www.lithiumstudios.org/forum/vie ... 9df0abe93e)

It can be useful for spotting spam registrations and flagging them for manual attention / approval, You can also prevent users that it's flagged from posting until you manually approve them.

I can't remember if I've told Paul about this in the past or not.

I hope there's something they can do, that thread of porn from this morning had more penis than I expected to ever see on the LRR forums. Glad to see its gone now.

If it had been Morgan I might have laughed. Lets just say what was in the thread involved 2 dudes and leave it at that :(

Well. I didn't see that particular thread (I generally don't open the threads, I just find the spammer's profile and ban them and delete all their posts from there) but I guess I'm probably well suited for this job then. Whatever it was, I've probably seen worse. Or... yes, worse. Let's stick with that. ;D

O I've seen much worse as well it's just not something that should be on the LRR forums. And when I saw the thread name I was like "No way..." and then checked it and was like "yep they did"

How many penises would you like? I hope it is lots!

More seriously: I'd like to second the recommendation of Anti-Spam ACP... we use that at xkcd, and it is a massive help. We've also turned on post approval for new users (ie if your postcount is 0, your posts go into a queue and have to be approved by a mod) which works, but means the mods need to be constantly checking the approval queue and processing the things there, even during periods of lower spam intensity.

Is there a system which could check the content of the first post?

Y'know, check for URLs and the like?

Ok, after a glitch with the mod install system (oh how I hate you, phpBB) I have installed Anti-Spam ACP 1.0.5. It looks like a pretty cool anti-spam package. To start with, I have enabled Akismet antispam moderation on post submissions, that is what we use on the blog (it is included with Wordpress) and it is pretty effective there, so we shall see if it helps.

So tempting, but very useful. if Paul's set it up to delete all posts when you ban them and its super handy. It does ask for confirmation so you can't accidentally ban a regular.

This is SPAM watch 2012.
I am noticing a slow down in spam generation and distribution, I feel as though the counter measures maybe helping.

I think we should all take a moment to thank Paul, who is glorious and wonderful and does the thankless, somewhat icky job of keeping these forums running. And he does it all with far fewer curse words than I would apply in the same situation.

Thanks, Paul. <3
