Artemis Bridge Simulator meetup around 07/11/2016?

This might be out of the blue, but there seems to be some interest in doing a game of Artemis Bridge Simulator & possibly do a aimul-cast online.

Details aren't fully set, buy here's what sketched out so far.

People interested so far...

* TStodden (have PC + Android version)
* AdmiralMemo (PC)
* V_Nome (Need Sent PC Key)
* ReilaOda (PC?)

The game supports 6 ships with 6 players per ship (5 stations + captain). So crews will need to communicate with each other, so expect to join a voice server like Discord.

Right now we're looking at starting around midnight (12:00 AM) CDT Sunday Monday, but this info is subject to change.

I have 5 4 spare PC keys for those who want to join to cover those who may need a copy, so don't let the issue of NOT having the game stop you.

For those who aren't familiar with the game it's like playing as the crew of a Star Trek-like ship through a random (or scripted) mission with each person taking a role. Whoever is running the server will act as captain (as they won't have a station to work with; only a "main screen"). We're not expecting to win or survive (being total noobs at the game), but we'll see how far we can get.

Update: Due to activities Saturday, this is getting pushed back a day to better accommodate. Those who are still interested & need a key, please get in touch with me ASAP.

EDIT (06.15.2016) -- Just updating Subject for main forum view... See posts lower on this page for new details...

Is this midnight between Saturday and Sunday, or between Sunday and Monday? If it's the first, I probably can't participate. If it's the second, I'm off Monday, so I can probably swing it.

Midnight CDT = 6AM BST, so I doubt I can make it unfortunately.

It would be 1 AM EDT Sunday... potentially knocking you out, but nothing is currently set in stone... so it could change.

Yeah, I just realized I'd be out-of-state at that point, unless you can get a laptop to Pennsylvania for me. :-D

I can do Sunday afternoon/evening/night or any time Monday.

Seems like this is falling through... which isn't surprising, considering how impulsive this is.

Perhaps a different time that's better coordinated.

Yeah. If the time were not on Memorial Day weekend, it'd probably be better.

Memo, it seems things are just falling into place. I spent yesterday (Saturday) with my mother & grandma (went casino hopping for my birthday), which left me a bit exhausted...

So we'll push it back to Monday Night / Morning. That way, I'll have a bit more energy to focus on this.

Just some quick heads up for those who are interested...

We'll be looking at using V_Nome's Discord server for voice chat, mostly for load balancing on my end, since I'll be handling 2 instances of the game (one server, one client) in addition to OBS. He'll bring you into the Streaming channel.

For the server, the working address will be tstodden.servegame.com (DNS set up through No-IP, just to keep things simple). I'll likely get the server up & running 15 minutes prior (~11:45 PM CDT) for those who want to get in a bit early.

For those who wish to stream at the same time, please speak up so we can get you added to the MultiTwitch address.

As for ship roles, it'll be on a mutual agreement. The key roles that need to be covered are...

* Captain -- This player will be in command. MAY run another station (depending on skill) as needed. May want to select "Main View" to accommodate their view remotely (if they don't have access to the server window).
* Helms / Navigation -- Need somebody piloting the ship
* Weapons -- Need somebody to attack the enemy ships

Optional rolls to fill are...

* Engineering -- The person tweaking & repair systems... also have a small crew of "Red Shirts" to command.
* Science -- Long-range scanning & target analysis
* Communications -- Talk to other ships (friends & foes)

Since we're not going to be playing a carrier... The Fighter Roll will NOT be utilized.

Solo mode will be a combat deal... so it's likely we're going to die a few times as we try to learn the game.

Artemis Bridge Simulator Wrap-up

Postby TStodden » 30 May 2016, 01:04

Thanks everybody who participated in this venture. It was fun, even though all I did was chauffeur the crew (being helmsman). It was a definite learning experience for all as we were completely inexperienced in the game.

For those who missed it (as I forgot the enable archives), here's a quick rundown...

Mission 1: Success!
  • Game Settings
    • Siege Lv 1
    • No Extras
    • USFS Light Cruiser "Artemis"
  • Crew
    • Captain: < Vacant >
    • Helms: TStodden
    • Weapons: AdmiralMemo
    • Engineering: ReilaOda
    • Science: V_Nome
    • Comms: V_Nome

Playing "Democratically" on a Starship DOESN'T work. I was flying poorly (didn't have precise bearings) & Engineering was having fits managing power (Warp & Shields don't seem to play nice). Weapons were going after everything with little regard to collateral damage.

HOWEVER, we did manage to get through it & passively permitted ReilaOda to run as captain (there was no objections) for the later missions.

Mission 2: FAILURE!
  • Game Settings
    • Siege Lv 2
    • Few Friendly Ships
    • USFS Light Cruiser "Artemis"
  • Crew
    • Captain: ReilaOda
    • Helms: TStodden
    • Weapons: AdmiralMemo
    • Engineering: ReilaOda
    • Science: V_Nome
    • Comms: V_Nome

With one mission under our belts & better working knowledge of the game, we decided to step up the difficulty one notch (to 2 / 11) as we're more comfortable with our roles... although we did have a few missteps (like forgetting to raise shields during combat & nailing the center of the ship within the nuke's blast area), which we did recover from.

The challenge that happened was more on enemies (or number of them) we weren't expecting.

Cause of Failure: Death by overwhelming numbers -- There was an entire fleet of ships (around 5 - 6) we were engaged with when we ran low on weapons & power. Since the enemy was too close to the nearest station, couldn't resupply & pretty much died a warrior's death.

Mission 3: FAILURE!
  • Game Settings
    • Siege Lv 1
    • Few Friendly Ships, Few Terrain (None Lethal)
    • USFS Battleship (?) "Kobayahsi"
  • Crew
    • Captain: ReilaOda
    • Helms: TStodden
    • Weapons: AdmiralMemo
    • Engineering: ReilaOda
    • Science: V_Nome
    • Comms: V_Nome

In this mission, we went back to base level, but added a few extra things. Somebody (suspecting Memo) secretly changed ships on us before the start of the mission server (hence the '?' next to the ship we used) as a few things were different for some players. The ship name was changed as well (being Sci-Fi nerds, name it something appropriate).

Things seemed to working until one combat encounter suddenly ended the mission (where our ship was destroyed).

Cause of Failure: Death by collateral explosion -- In short, we were in VERY CLOSE QUARTERS combat (~150 km) when the enemy ship exploded... which co-incidentally took us out in the process. The lesson learned was to keep ships we're attacking generally outside docking range (~600 km).

Mission 4: SUCCESS!
  • Game Settings
    • Siege Lv 1
    • Few Friendly Ships, Few Terrain features (None Lethal), Few Anomalies
    • USFS Dreadnought (?) "Business Venture"
  • Crew
    • Captain: ReilaOda
    • Helms: TStodden
    • Weapons: ReilaOda
    • Engineering: V_Nome
    • Science: AdmiralMemo
    • Comms: AdmiralMemo

This was the major shake-up on crew as Reila, V_Nome & Memo rotated stations. I stayed at the helms as nobody was interested & I was doing a pretty good job. The ship was changed yet again (hence the '?', but noted the closest to what appeared to be playing as) for this venture. A few more environmental stuff was added for flavor.

One ship was surprisingly weak (despite their boasting to comms) once we encountered them. There was some terrain challenges we had to deal with like asteroids & mines, but wasn't too bad. Had a few hiccups w/ Engineering regarding engines (was supposed to go Warp 4, but controls were only reporting Warp 1), which were resolved (people changing to unfamiliar stations can cause that). Reila also wanted to play weapons for a round.

I will admit some of the voice commentary (which I hope the others archived) was a bit colorful (but still remained mostly clean) at times & laughs were had by all while playing. We'll definitely have to set up another run in the future.

If you want to try this game out w/ friends (or possibly join us), you can pick up the game in one 3 ways...

* Purchase a DRM-Free "Bridge License" (6-system license set) directly from publisher for $40 US at http://artemis.eochu.com/

* Purchase individual copies on Steam ( http://store.steampowered.com/app/247350/ ) at $7 / ea. OR $35 for a "Bridge Pack" (6 copies)... needless to state, everybody will need their own Steam acct.

* Mobile versions (iOS / Android) available for $3 / ea. Please be aware that versions MUST match up in order to do a PC-Mobile connection (so downgrades on the PC may be required, as needed)

One person (in this playthrough, it was me) who was hosting the game server as well as playing from a second instance of the game. On future broadcasts, I'll likely be focusing on just my view instead of mine + server's (main screen) view. While 4 players seems to work fairly well, would like to get more players into this & possibly go multi-ship as well (since the game server supports up to 8 ships in PC v2.4.0... so it can support up to 48 players)... although the question of Co-op OR PvP would remain.

It does take some time to get use to things for the first mission or two, I would highly recommend this game & hope to do this again (as I still have 3 Steam Keys for this).

Same with me, of course. This is why we're trying to figure out a good schedule... If we do it same time as previously (1 AM on a Monday, US Eastern), I can work it out. Might not be good for everyone, though.

Count me in. My biggest issue is I've got an exam around that time, but I'm doing it on Saturday and I live in the future, so Sunday/Monday should be fine. GMT+9:30 time zone

Re: Artemis Bridge Simulator meetup around 07/11/2016?

Postby TStodden » 15 Jun 2016, 18:22

Since I've secured July 11th off (Most for "Iwata's Day"), I thought I'd check about doing another group gathering.

The dates I can do this will be between Midnight (12:00 AM CDT / 5:00 AM GMT) on July 11th to 11:00 PM (CDT) on July 13th (4:00 AM GMT on July 14th). Other personal commitments (sleep, food, LRR streams, ect.) will cut into availability... but should be out far enough the minimize conflicts.

Between 10:00 PM & 2:00 AM CDT (3:00 AM - 7:00 AM GMT) is ideal for me, but we'll work on it.

For those outside North America, the times I'm noting are in Central Daylight Savings Time (GMT-5). I'm doing the math for GMT / UTC to provide an international standard for others to do the math from there.

For those who are interested in joining, just a few things that need to be covered.

1) Make sure you have a copy of Artemis on you. -- Ideally on PC, but those with only the mobile version will be accepted as well. Just make sure you have the latest "core version" (at time of post, it's Version 2.4.x) in order to connect to the server.

The PC version on Steam is $7 for a single copy or $35 for a "Bridge Pack" (6 copies). Mobile versions (iOS / Android) is $3.

For those who cannot afford the PC version, I still have 2 Steam Keys left that I can give to those who wish to join. Like all games on my giveaway list, it's mostly first-come, first-serve... but I may hold off on send out the keys until a week prior to the meet-up.

2) You will need to be able to join a Discord Server via voice. -- THIS WILL BE A MEET-UP REQUIREMENT! -- Since this game does require cooperation with everybody, we will need to hear you in order to survive... even if you're only the captain (sitting in your cushy seat, not directly controlling everything).

We'll try to use the LRR community server or possibly V_Nome's (assuming he's OK with it) server for this as we'll have to have a private voice room to use.

3) Streaming on Twitch is OPTIONAL! -- While it's fun to share our escapades, not everybody (especially those on mobile) will be able to broadcast their gameplay at the same time (possibly due to bandwidth issues). Therefore, we're not going to force it.

However, you're welcomed to do so.

4) You will need to be a member of the LRR community (or a trusted "friend" of a member) to join. -- Sorry to the randos, but we want to play with friends ideally. Friends-of-Friends or family members will be permitted.

As long as you're active in LRR stream chats or the forums (just so we're aware of you), you won't be turned away.

For the game server, I can host again (Just need to renew the DNS). However, streaming + hosting can cause some performance issues (as streaming takes like 80% of my upload bandwidth)... so if somebody else has more upload bandwidth & doesn't seen to monitor your usage (as I'm thankful my connection is unmetered), we can address this later.

That's about all for this post. I'll update things as they become relevant.

Planned Players
* TStodden (CDT / GMT-5)
* AdmiralMemo (EDT / GMT-4) (Planned)

Previous Players (Not confirmed unless listed above)
* AdmiralMemo (EDT / GMT-4)
* V_Nome (MDT / GMT-6)
* ReilaOda (Time Zone Unknown)

It's +1 hr to my times, so the earliest would be 1:00 AM Monday (July 11th) for you Memo.

While we're at it... as a little extra for fun, try to think of possible names for the ship. We'll like go with some silly name when starting.
