Do you mean the one who rubs LRR DVD cases all over himself, Graham-with-360-game-cases style? Or some other iteration of that guy? ;)

Edit: Watching it again, I find myself hoping that "ass-butt" will make an appearance in a cH episode.

After rewatching CH02, I appreciate this video more. There's a LOT of foreshadowing in CH02.

Of course, it was good before, but at first I didn't think either of them were as good as the first. Knowing about the hat and the Xbox and the firing helped me appreciate it more.

To literally own somebody is to exert your utter dominance over them, in a way. It's always seemed to me the logical progression.

I think I can assume you knew how "own" morphed into "pwn" as "teh" came from "the", but that was the part that bugged me, personally.

It's a Warcraft monster. Wrath of the Lich King includes a continent in the frozen north.
Incidentally, your name and half of your message actualize as gibberish on my computer. Color me confused.

Graham wrote:I should say that while the "Ben isn't Jewish" joke started as an in joke, it's one I wasn't really party to, and I still find it a funny aside in the context of the video.

Meaning, hopefully it's amusing without the prior knowledge. I think it is.

Don't worry Graham, I still found the scene funny. I was just wondering where the joke came from and if the Star of David he is wearing was intentional.
Now that I know its even better.

Own -> slavery -> gamers are racists, QED.

This video was dreadfully awesome, guys. Good work.

Also, I hope we get to see more of Jer's D&D group, they were great. In particular I loved Dale - his line deliveries were genius.

"That is surprising!"

Yeah he does. Even my protestant-rasied Jewdar goes off looking at him. But maybe his girlfriend is Jewish...

Hilare!

Did you really just say that?

Really?

"Hilare"? As in "hilarious" without the "ious"?

From my hackery life, I've always heard this story:

Once you break into someone's machine to the point where you have root-level access (On a *nix machine, this makes you, effectively, God), you now effectively own that machine - as in, you can do what you will with it, it is functionally yours. In many cases, the way that the attacker compromised your machine is something space-bendingly stupid (like you made your root password "password"), so being owned was rather humiliating.

The concept of owning being a humiliating action is something too useful to be kept within the bounds of black or grey-hat hackery, and quickly found itself via cross-pollination to the world of gaming, where we find it today, mutated into pwned (Which I always thought "looked" snappier for some reason) and its variations.

THE END.

IMO there's no way this usage of "own" has a single source or origin. It is even more unlikely that "pwn" has a definable or linear origin.

They are memes. They came from various places and gained power and popularity through subtle and pervasive machinations.

I always just thought it was a typo that caught on, considering how close the O and P are together on the keyboard. Most likely during CS in it's hayday.

Gotta have the typing skillz to pay aforementioned billz.

Good times, crew. I was a fan of the Skittles conversation, the Ben Jew jokes and having Bill explain the entire plan about Jew while Jer is standing there.

And seriously, the NES360 needs more love on the boards! It was awesome and a better result than I had hoped from the set in the previous two episodes. The fact that Paul goes to the trouble to create a splash screen is epic. You know, don't bother with an emulator or anything. And did you know you can play the first AND third party games? Hilarious stuff.

The constant cuts during the coffee shop scene were abrupt and distracting. I think Jer pulling the Bad Dudes (a superb choice, btw), out of his shirt did more to distract from the NES360 gag than add to them. And per the no-shoes-while-sabotaging comments, I assumed they were being "stealthy."

got it memorized? i do!

Postby avatarkayla » 09 Dec 2008, 17:21

call me nit picky, but their is no chim-chara. in the chim chim cher-ee song.

Bert:
Chim chim-in-ey, chim chim-in-ey
Chim chim cher-ee!
A sweep is as lucky, as lucky can be
Chim chim-in-ey, chim chim-in-ey
Chim chim cher-oo!
Good luck will rub off when I shakes 'ands with you

Or blow me a kiss and that's lucky too

Now, as the ladder of life 'as been strung
You might think a sweep's on the bottommost rung
Though I spends me time in the ashes and smoke
In this 'ole wide world there's no 'appier bloke

Chim chim-in-ey, chim chim-in-ey
Chim chim cher-ee!
A sweep is as lucky, as lucky can be
Chim chim-in-ey, chim chim-in-ey
Chim chim cher-oo!
Good luck will rub off when I shakes 'ands with you

All:
Chim chim-in-ey, chim chim-in-ey
Chim chim cher-ee!
A sweep is as lucky, as lucky can be
Chim chim-in-ey, chim chim-in-ey
Chim chim cher-oo!
Good luck will rub off when I shakes 'ands with you

Bert:
I choose me bristles with pride, yes, I do
A broom for the shaft and a brush for the flute
Up where the smoke is all billered and curled
'Tween pavement and stars is the chimney sweep world
When there's 'ardly no day nor 'ardly no night
There's things 'alf in shadow and 'alfway in light
On the rooftops of London coo, what a sight!

Chim chim-in-ey, chim chim-in-ey
Chim chim cher-ee!
When you're with a sweep you're in glad company
Nowhere is there a more 'appier crew
Than them wot sings, "Chim chim cher-ee, chim cher-oo!"
On the
Chim chim-in-ey, chim chim cher-ee, chim cher-oo!

though i did like the "i love to laugh" re-make

The story I've heard about the birth of pwn was a guy accidentally typing it instead of own, and it caught on. And that's about it.
