Clearly they wear them to draw attention to themselves hiding behind the barrels.

The entire game series is based on a US army advertising slogan, "Army of one" which was so popular that after over 20 years with each of its previous slogans, the Army paid over a million dollars to the firm that created "army of one" so that they could replace it after just over 5 years instead of the 10 it had contracted for. The only reason it lasted that long was that Congress had to approve the payment to cancel the contract and dragged its feet.

When I saw the very first trailer for this series, I was pretty excited because it seemed like it would be a cool co-op game, but after more information and reviews came out, I pretty much lost all interest.
