TTC 93 - Origins Preview

Postby Graham » 04 Jul 2015, 15:14

This week on TTC join James, Alex and Cam as they discuss the changes to coverage rules and the new mulligan rule. Then they dive into Magic Origins and what the set has to offer for Limited, Standard and Highlander playability.

Is somebody rubbing the mic against their beard or something this episode? There's a lot of background noise and it's distracting from some quality discussion.

Jhessian Girl *da da da dun da*
Why can't I draw me a card like that?

Also Managorger Hydra being the Green Chasm Skulker is a comparison that makes me really happy.

This is only for the first part, about the new rules, but there were a couple of incorrect things:

- The coverage layout rule are not set in stone. Toby Elliot (level 5 judge) confirmed there may be exceptions that apply in a case-by-case basis, i.e. dredge. http://blogs.magicjudges.org/telliott/2015/06/30/lay-of-the-land/
- Toby Elliot also confirmed that Patrick Chapin would still have received a game loss. What he did equated to a game loss. The video confirmed what he did. http://www.reddit.com/r/magicTCG/comments/3biiz3/ori_new_mulligan_rules_and_other_rules_changes/csmmpe6
- The current playmat, while awesome, is not correct, as the library and graveyard are not adjacent.

Also, random feedback for the video version, quite often you make comparisons between a new cards, or a card you pulled from a pack, and an old card. I think it would be good, if you have the space, to have more than 1 card visible on the screen to compare. Might not be worth the effort, though.

Agree. I hate to be Jonny Complainerson without offering useful feedback, but I just can't identify that noise. It's almost as if someone off camera has one of the mics the others are wearing and is just flexing that bendy bit back and forth the whole time. Or like the time there were rubber bands attaching the camera to the tripod and it just creaked with every movement. Obviously that's not the issue here, but I hope the issue is found and is politely but sternly asked to leave.

Can you tell I'm writing these as I watch?

*puts his judge shirt on* For Demonic Pact, you choose the mode when the ability goes on the stack, and then you can interact with the ability and Stifle it, etc. So yes, you can choose the lose the game ability, then counter it, and if it was the last ability, the card will now just sit there without you being able to choose anything.

I think Managorger Hydra will be the cause of many a screwup with removal. For example, cast it and one other spell, it's a 2/2. Opponent Shocks it, well, it's a 3/3 before the spell resolves and it lives.

It also makes combat math hard because any instant is a combat trick, and normal combat tricks can be cast on other creatures and still boost the Hydra.

But yea, I'm sure it will eat a lot of removal, real quick, because if it's not dealt with, it gets out of hand real quick.

I agree, the Managorger Hydra is going to be one of those cards than drawn early and played on curve will be amazing and certainly have to be targeted early with removal. If you draw it on turn 7 though? It's probably pretty bad, but at least has some upside during a complete board stall, something that a 3/3 for 3 wouldn't have.

Hey James, for enchantment deck:

All your lands are now also enchantments so the combo with Starfield works

I'm excited for Day's Undoing. Give me more payload for my Nekusar commander deck. And I'm really considering Alhammarret's Archive, to let the deck actually get card advantage over my opponents. Draw into my bombs, payloads, and answers faster. Then Day's Undoing and Time Reversal to refill the library, while my opponents take 7 damage from the draws. Especially nice if Niv-mizzet is out to burn off my draw triggers.

For my Sarruk/Temir commander deck, I got some very nice new options:
Gaea's Revenge, because big beefy creature that doesn't worry about removal.
Managorger Hydra, because I'm hydra heavy in this deck with a lot of +1/+1 synergy.
Outland Colossus, with Sarruk giving trample, this guy is getting Renown and becoming huge with counters.
Skysnare Spider, just all up-side creature.

Origins is definitely got some nice new cards for Commander decks.
I'm not insane. I just have an overly vivid imagination!

For Demonic Pact, from a play perspective I wonder how you're supposed to indicate which modes have already been used. Typically in MTG you're not supposed to just have to memorize information.

Grab some mini-d6 and put a 1, 2, 3, 4 marked die on the card. Then remove the choice picked? Casually that's what I would do. Not sure how competitive play would keep track.

This makes all of your lands die due to being 0/0 creatures.

Well, in addition to most people wanting to not kill all their lands, Starfield then probably immediately turns off again. And if it doesn't, then you would have had enough enchantments to turn it on without killing your land.

Go on... I still fail to see the point you are trying to make in the particular context of the discussion

... that playing Enchanted Evening and Starfield of Nyx in the same deck is a bad idea.
Because it kills your own land.
And killing your land is a bad idea.
