The Pauper Topic- Discussion of the commons-only format

Postby MowDownJoe » 14 Dec 2015, 13:58

I've been on a kick of brewing Pauper decks on MtGO, so I thought I'd start this topic.

First off, watch this video if you're unfamiliar with the format, courtesy of Tolarian Community College.

Then, tell me what you've got going on. Any cool brews? (I have a nice Aristocrats list myself.) Tales to spin from diving into Leagues? Looking for deck advice?

Haven't hit the league yet, but will probably be playing UB Teachings when I do. My record with it is pretty good, but I do have a non-zero number of loses to the clock. Need to tighten up my game. Crypt Incursion is crazy good though.

Other option is probably Dredge.

I should really dip my toe into Pauper... I'll look into some decks sometime this week.

New to pauper, but absolutely love it. As mentioned elsewhere, I recently went 4-0 at fnm with Bogles: http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/04-12-15-pauper-bogles/ (-2 Ledgewalker, +2 Heliod's Pilgrim, actually worked out really well). The deck was enormously fun to play with, as seemed all the decks I faced (Faeries, Mono Black Control, Goblins, Tron).

Going to have a proper gander through the above decks when I get a chance. In terms of brewing I really want to do some artifact bouncing Glaze Fiend thing, deck in progress...

So, I really want to revive an old combo deck from the Extended format back when I started playing, called Life.dec. It's as it sounds, a deck that just wins with an infinite life combo. Problem is I'm relying on a specific creature for the combo, since there aren't any 0-cost equipment in Pauper. Nomads en-Kor kind of do the job of repeatedly targeting a creature until it's at a ridiculous-sized butt, but I really need some redundancy.

Still a silly deck that I don't ever plan on playing seriously. (That's what my Boros Landfall deck is for.) But it makes me smile in its absurdity.

Speaking of combos:

Voyaging Satyr + High Tide + Freed from the Real + Psionic Gift.

Such silliness.

And that is why WoTC never printed High Tide at common on MtGO. :P

If High Tide at common is the benefit of playing paper pauper, I suppose no Brindle Shoat at common is the downside. Which sucks, I really want to try out your Aristocrat deck sometime - are there any Shoat replacements that spring to mind? Also: do you think there is room for Bone Splinters / Innocent Blood in there?

To be honest, I'm probably going to rework the deck to be Jund-colored when OGW drops. The Springleaf Drum land and Crumbling Vestige seem like they'll do solid work fixing the mana base and allow me to add Hissing Iguanar, which I just learned existed about a week ago. In a Jund build, I'd be looking at Mogg War Marshals. 3 bodies, 2 mana? Sign me up! And then I get to cut the Terrors and Victim of Nights for Terminates.
I did consider Innocent Blood in the board instead of Chainer's Edict, to be perfectly honest. But the price from MtGO bots scared me away. If you want to try that, go for it. Mainly wanted something in my board to hit things targeted removal couldn't.

AND MAJOR SHAKE-UP straight from the recent ban list announcement. Cloud of Faeries is gone. No more Esper Familiars. Mono-U Delver takes a hit in the crossfire, but it'll likely come out alright if worse for wear.

(Also, something about Splinter Tom? Wasn't paying attention to that part.)

They talked about balancing colours in the announcement, personally I feel like the lifting from shoulders of brewers' "is my deck resilient and fast enough to even stand a chance against the faerie deck" is a bigger deal. I'm optimistic that this will open up some variety to the format.
