Duels-Style Deck League

Postby Atifexe » 05 Aug 2016, 16:15

Hello folks! There's a little something I'd like to undertake, but it requires some input from the community. This idea's been rattling around in my head for a while, and I think it would be fun to do, and hopefully an interesting deckbuilding challenge/bit of reading for everyone else.

The idea is relatively simple; a multiple of eight people create decks adhering to construction rules inspired by Magic Duels, then I generate brackets (or possibly just pairings, if we'd rather it be a swiss) and simulate games between them, taking notes and writing a colourful combat summary to be posted here. At the end, we could crown a winner based on game results, and/or have a strawpoll for people to vote on their favorite decks.

The deck construction rules for the first run of this (assuming it becomes popular/successful enough to warrant followups) would be as follows:
  • Deck size is 60 cards, and sideboards are not used;
  • The number of copies of a given card in a list is limited by its rarity;
      4 for commons
      3 for uncommons
      2 for rares
      1 for mythics
  • The rarity used to determine the maximum number of copies of a card is the highest it's ever been printed at, including special products;
      Gatherer is recommended for determining this.
  • Allowed sets and banned cards are as per the Modern format.
  • The goal is fun before competitiveness.

So, what does everyone think? Would anyone like to submit a deck and see this come to fruition?

I'd be interested in playing this kind of thing. I'll brew up an elfball deck.

Sign me up, I have something pretty darn silly in mind. How are you planning on simulating the games?

That's pretty funny.

But thankfully, Fyndhorn Elves isn't modern-legal anyway.

Oh yeah, it's totally not. Right. Still, Dragon whelp... dryad arbor, kird ape, and Serra Angel all get kind of screwed over by this. Dragon Whelp and Serra angel less so, but it's still funny.

My plan had been to play both sides of the game myself, using something like TappedOut's playtester and my dual monitor setup. I want to be able to keep the pace of the game slow enough that I can transcribe any major plays as they occur, rather than having to rely on memory or refer back to an automatically generated log later.

Yeah, some cards get nerfed pretty hard by this particular rarity restriction, and I feel like that's okay if it also hits a non-zero number of high-power cards that could otherwise create some one-sided games.

In case this matters... highest rarity ever, or highest rarity within Modern?

Yeah, I read the first post, but it was somewhat unclear to me. Reading it again, I get it now.

Any tips on how I might be able to make the wording clearer, Memo? I don't want to create confusion, and I'm drawing a blank on what might clear it up.

Also, I'm really looking forward to what people come up with!

No, it's fine. It's just the "highest it's ever been printed at" + "Only Modern-legal" collided in my brain to think "Wait, what if it was printed at a higher rarity before Modern? Does that count?"

It's as clear as can be, and my brain just derped.

I think all of the fetches have been printed as expeditions, so you can have at most 1. Same with the Temple Garden.

I'll have to reduce my lands too if that's the case.

Otherwise: http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/azorius- ... call-duel/

It's equipment storm. Paladin/Riddlesmith draw triggers from the many free equipments (don't forget metalcraft to attach Paradise Mantle for extra mana), reload with Retract/Recall/Wave, then mill out with Jace's Erasure. (Erasure not required to start going off, as you'll probably draw one).

Also considered going Jeskai for Molten Nursery, Prowess and Twisted Image.

Also also, this could be a modern deck maybe...

Edit: just found out that this is actually already a modern deck, and here I thought I'd come up with something new...

We've only had two deck lists submitted so far, and one still needs some tweaks, I believe. I hope we can make this a thing, and for that, we need a few more participants.

Would anyone mind if I also submitted a deck, or would that feel like a conflict of interest, given that I am running the games?
