Well, my homebrew campaign only lasted a few sessions at school, but I'm hoping to start a new one using online tools after I rework the system a bit (jedi were ridiculously OP, and Green Lantern's needed some stricter rules on what they can construct at what level).

Session before last for our group somebody got past a guard ogre by claiming to be delivering pizza.

Gonna rant here for a moment.

I absolutely hate parties where every single player feels the intense need for their character to be "the quirky one." I know, everyone wants to have a memorable character, but I cannot tell you how many sessions I've had to single-handedly drag along as a player because the rest of the party is too busy trying to get into whacky shenanigans for hours on end. Not even quest-related or helpful shenanigans. Like "I wanna start a band" or "I'm just gonna focus on getting laid 24/7." The absolute worst was two people who wanted to be kleptomaniacs to the point that they ground the game to a halt for half an hour at a time so that they could try to steal literally everything that they possibly could.

So yeah, when I'm a DM, this shit does not fly. Being whacky from time to time can be fun and character building, but I'm eventually just going to start making horrible things happen to you so we can get the plot training moving again.

My weekly group is currently playing Starblazer Adventures (fairly cinematic FATE), where we're all reserve crew on a generation ship gone wrong. It's been a lot of fun, but since I don't have my notes, I totally can't remember what we did last session.

The monthly group is playing my RPG, Blade & Crown. It's a long-term campaign where the PCs are part of a wandering troupe of performers. Last session, they got jumped by a gang of bandits. The PCs are currently investigating an extortion ring that may have more connections than they bargained for...

Thursday past I finally started my new D&D 3.5 campaign. It's an urban campaign set in Sharn.

After a few hours of finishing up everyone's characters, the party, consisting of a reformed street thief turned investigator... a stoic warforged working as a city guard while it investigates rumors of new warforge, and a dragonmarked gnome scion of house sivis artificer have been brought together to fight crime in the bowels of Sharn and investigate the recent rash of mysterious arsons plaguing the city.

I am SO happy to be DMing again and with a really great crew too.

I actually bothered writing this one down.
Most of the dialogue is quoted. This was a great group of Frieda that bicker really well.

Lightening lee is the main person In this one. The most sarcastic SOB, Noviah, is an Indian bounty hunter and the pool played is a the doctor as captain. Turns out the bad guy The bounty hunter is after is also the shmuck that took lee's stuff. Fighting ensues. The doctor cracks someone over the head with a pool cue.
Based on Serenity RPG.
"Well, shit." Lee sighed as he looked across the blasted and scortched desert. He shifted uneasily trying not to disturb the fresh bruises he recently recieved from the three large gentlemen in the bar. It had started out as a game of cards nothing more nothing less. Lee was down a lot, but he had been confident lady lucky would see him through. So without hesitation he slammed his two pistols on the table.
"Deal the cards sir," he motioned to the mountain of a man who held most of his money. As the large gentleman began to throw out the cards Lee noticed something up his sleeve. It looked like a card.
"you cheating piece of crap!" he yelled as he quickly and nimbly slipped the card out of the man's sleeve.
"you gotta problem with that boy?" the man rose to his feet slowly.
"Goodness you are certainly a large gentleman aren't you? You ate all your greens and such as a kid didn't you?" Lee asked sarcastically.
"Boy I suggest you move along before you get hurt," the man said patronizingly. He motioned and the two other guys at the table stood.
"Oh look you have friends, just what I'd expect from a Pansy."
Lee threw a punch at one of the goons. He felt the crack of his crooked nose as it collapsed under the blow. The large brute unfortunatly had a perfect shot and knocked him nearly cold as the blow landed square in Lee's jaw. He staggered, and the group of thugs took the oppertunity to finish the brawl quickly. They grabbed him and threw him out the front door. Beat him stripped him and drug him out back. Quick and simple.
Lee looked around again.
"shit" he repeated.

Wesley looked around the bar uneasily. He alwaysed tensed up during fights. He felt bad about the gentleman that just got beat to crap. But he knew he couldn't have helped him. He took a sip of his drink. Well he has to come back in at some point, he could maybe help mediate the situation then, but that fight just escalated too quickly. He sipped again at his drink.
He stood up and smiled brightly at the men at the pool table. "Could I get next game?"

Noviah stepped out of the truck cabin onto the blistering hot sand. She eyed the tiny town Haley Grey was rummered to be in, she was close and she knew it. She began walking slowly toward the center of town, when she saw a man sitting out behind the saloon. He was only wearing a pair of grubby pants, an was covered in fresh bruises. He looked like he may have run into Grey. She walked carefully toward him.
"Hey, do you know a Haley Grey? I hear he is staying here and I need to talk to him." Noviah yelled at the half naked shmuck.
He looked up quickly, but it took him a minute to respond. "Ah Pocahontas you see many moons ago, I arrive here in this town..."
Noviah grimmaced, "what a piece of shit" she thought.
"Cut the shit," she interupted. "He is a huge guy and runs with a small group of guys, around two or four. You look like you may have met him. You gimme some info and there's some credits in it for you."
"Tell you what, you help me get my stuff back and we'll see about getting your boyfriend. Ok? By the way, name's Levi, but everyone calls me Lee."
"Noviah" she replied simply.
"Ok well let's go." Lee said, standing quickly dusting off his pants.
"Hold up," Noviah said, do you even have an idea of what your going to
do?"
"Ideas? I can already tell we won't be getting along," Lee smirked arrogantly.
"alright look, here's the plan. You in first and find Grey. I'll follow up and snag him so we can cart him off."
"I guess that'll work." Lee replied.

Wesley aimed down his pool stick, "eight ball side pocket." he struck the cue ball, it Rolled easy into it's pocket.
He smiled at his opponent.
"Good game, I believe we had wagered 40 on the game?"
The guy eyed him and pulled out some dirt credit bills.
"Thanks! Say how about a drink hmm? Bartender a scotch and water for my friend here."

Lee jumped through the front door of the saloon, trying to make as much noise as possible.
"I'm lookin for a man by the name Haley Grey!" he shouted over the ruckus of the patrons.
"Anyone of you seen him speak now!"
The bartender eyed him.

I had to convince the ranger to put some clothes on, I rolled a natural 1. he crafted a pair of pants from Bear Traps and wore those instead.

I just hosted a game at my house for the first time ever. We played Heirs to the Lost World. There were some great stunts, including a thrown beer mug that sent a pirate sprawling backwards into a table piled with treasure, and a great chain used to scrape a pesky alchemist off the hull of a ship, like a barnacle.

My urban detective campaign continues to run well. In the last session the team discovers an important clue, and on the way back to the station notices someone being pursued by several people. After following down an alley they confront the pursuers, and have a staredown which is made hilarious by the fact that the party gnome is riding on the warforged's shoulders. Enjoyable combat ensues, and they are able to get another clue and a potential contact from the man they save.

Well, we didn't have too many other sessions since this, but started back up yesterday.

My Elf Cleric got so mad, he flipped a table. Using his new Giantkind Gloves. At a pair of Sharpshooter Goblins. (Or possibly hobgoblins.) Destroying their cover behind barrels and seriously hurting one of them.


I keep on wanting to do fun/cool things that this character really isn't made for. (I had to go healer because nobody else would.) So I keep on trying. He's getting better at them. He's an elf with a beard in stock 4e, which isn't a thing which exists, so I'm already outside the norm for the archetype :P

Edit: Oh yeah, and we all stopped playing the cyberpunk game ages ago, so I'm back to sporadically working out encounters for a steampunk game on a custome setting I've been plannnig for years.

So here's what happened. My two PCs were Johnny, a street-level pickpocket and dealer who used kleptomancy, a way of gaining magical power by stealing things; and Veronica, a webcam girl using pornomancy to generate magical power through ritualistic sex. Both woke up in an empty, run down room in Brooklyn (despite Johnny being from Baltimore and Veronica from Queens), and after Johnny used a bit of kleptomantic magic to get them out, the two went their separate ways, chalking it up as something weird and unusual in their lives.

But both Johnny and Veronica were then hounded by repeated images of (respectively) their mother and father, who continually noted that they were disappointed in them, because they "Let Tyrell Rose get the better of them." To make matters more confusing, personal items from either were found in each others homes, and they were sharing some of each other's memories. Both independently realized that until they figured out who Tyrell Rose was, neither would be getting much sleep.

Veronica used a bit of wild magic to ensure a 'coincidental' meeting between the two characters again, and they hashed out an investigation plan. Veronica suggested that meeting up with a local Mak Attax circle seemed the best bet, since Mak Attax were suckers who could easily be played/more charitable than most people in the Occult Underground. As it turned out, the girl they met there was Moesha, a sixteen year old voodoo doll maker both knew. (She'd worked in Baltimore and New York.) She didn't know of Tyrell Rose, but was able to put them in touch with Trent, a Mak from upstate who did. Trent gave them the dope on Tyrell; he was a nasty piece of work with the magical ability to shove you inside your own mind, creating a fantasy world from your own memories and leaving you catatonic. (It is to the players credit that they did entertain the possibility that one or both of them had been attacked previously by Tyrell and were even now in a fantasy world he created, but they ultimately couldn't figure out how this would create the weird memory sharing, etc. they'd been experiencing.) Trent was worried for his friend Alex Lewis, an avatar of the Mystic Hermaphrodite who'd been beefing with Tyrell for a few weeks now. He asked the PCs to check out Alex's apartment and look for clues while he tried other haunts of his/her's. They agreed, and set off (although not before Veronica insisted on roping both Tyrell and Trent into a ritual, which neither of them were happy about for different reasons; however, Veronica needed a more powerful magical charge than she had).

They got to Alex's apartment, broke in and began looking for clues. Johnny, being a klepto, looked for something to snatch to get a bit of magical energy, and swiped a necklace off the table... which his hand passed right through. This was doubly intriguing, since he owned that particular one of a kind artifact, an intangible necklace that could only be picked up by its owner, and would tell its owner if anyone tried to steal it. He asked it if anyone had tried to steal it, and it replied, "I'm not here," and a second later, "You're not here either." Meanwhile, Veronica had discovered that Alex had graduated women's studies from the exact same community college she had, in the same year, and that her graduation certificate had the exact same tiny tear in the corner her's did. The two players just reached the same revelation as their mother and father walked in and confirmed it: They were Alex Lewis, who'd been attacked by Tyrell days ago, but once inside, their deliberately conflicted, contradictory mindset rebelled against itself, trying to push Alex out of the fantasy and back into the real world. The two players then burned the apartment block to the ground, killing the inhabitants in an effort to disrupt the perfect little fantasy and snap themselves back into reality. It worked.

The two players and myself then worked together to stat up Alex Lewis, using both of their previous character sheets and back stories to create a composite character, and the two co-operatively played him/her for the final act of the story, in which they remembered that Tyrell Rose had attacked Moesha in a robbery attempt the restaurant she worked in, and that Alex had sworn revenge. Unfortunately, Tyrell got the drop on him/her, forcing him/her into his/her own mind. They got together a small crew to help them take on Tyrell's gang, and in a somewhat chaotic attempt, they finally managed to get into a car chase with him, run him down, and execute him. While they failed to heal poor little Moesha (which was never a possibility), they did avenge her, and themselves.

Just a note, you said in your post that Veronica roped Tyrell and Trent into a ritual. Interesting as that would have been, Veronica roped Johnny and Trent into a ritual.

Still it led to a very funny moment at the reveal.

Veronica: Maybe we shouldn't have had sex.
Johnny: Darlin', I think we had masturbation.

Played Fiasco. Using the Dresden Files data set. I was a new magic being taught by a necromancer (player 2) who accidently gave me his copy of the Heart of Kemmler. The necromancer's drummer (player 3) was being hunted by a hit man who had magical powers (player 4), hired by a wizard who had stolen a Warden's Sword and was pretending to be a Warden (player 5). The fake Warden was watching me and allowed me to live as long as I ratted out various bits of info about my necromancer boss.

The neat thing about the Tilt in the Dresden Files Fiasco is that the Tilt occurs normally, but there is a second table where you roll to see how Harry Dresden gets involved. Harry was making a deposit at the bank where I had hid the Heart of Kemmler, which lead to a car chase through the streets of Chicago with fireballs being thrown back and forth, when we ended up at Deeps, where the hit man was contracted to kill the drummer.

Much fun was had by all.

Also, I played a game of Marvel RPG. One of the other players said "Psychopez may start off the game playing Iron Man, but half way through he always ends up being Bahaumt ZERO."

Plot points, multiattack, and unibeam for the win.

My friends and I play a homebrew game based on Final Fantasy. My character is a White Mage. I got a spell called Graviga that can immediately blast through a quarter of the target's HP.

We got into a big final showdown with our arch-nemesis, a guy named Tycoon. After whiffing his first attack and he used our first turns to buff ourselves and do some general preparative actions (I cast a spell that let me find out my target's weaknesses and immunities). One of our fighters managed to stun him, which set me up for the biggest single hit we've seen. I crit with Graviga, obliterating half of his current health for a whopping 834 damage! He ended up summoning a giant sand worm that immediately petrified for a short duration. On my next turn, I crit again with an AoE slow that hit Tycoon for seven turns (the worm was immune :c)!

I shudder to think how poorly that fight would have gone if I fumbled that roll.

so this evenings Dark Heresy session over Skype involved my main character being mostly busy "off stage", while I took over an absent players PC for the majority of the evening, portraying him with appropriate religious zeal for a 41st millennium preacher. I managed to convince an Archbishop to stay in his job to guide the people of a soon to be be-seiged city, then convinced a giant crowd of rioters to settle down and have a nice cup of tea and a prayer.

My party spent Thursday night exploring the sewers beneath Sharn whilst investigatign the source of the mysterious arsons. They discover a number of clues of areas covered in soot, and eventually stumble upon a nest of sewer drakes (and you thought those stories about flushed pets in the sewers were just made up). After a vigorous combat wherein I utterly fail to hurt the party's adamantine plated warforge (I need to add more touch attacks to my encouters I think) the group discovers that one of the drakes had mutated and aquired the ability to spit fire, much like the strange fire spitting rats they had encountered some time ago. The plot thickens.

One guy in my party dealt 60+ damage to a dude's arm in a system where limbs can take 8 damage before being considered broken/removed. So yeah, dude's arm was pretty much vaporised.
I'm thinking of vetoing the use of AMRs with depleted uranium rounds against humans.

I have a weekly game of D&D that I'm playing in. It's through the gaming society here in college. We recently moved to D&D Next, so our characters are a lot more squishy and vulnerable. We usually have around six or seven people playing, but this session we only had five people, including myself. For reference, we were an old, squishy, armour-less human Cleric (me), a surprisingly-intelligent Barbarian, a ranged Fighter, a crazed elven Monk and an extremely slippery halfling Rogue. We were down our tanks and our wizards, so we avoided combat as much as possible. Afterwards, the GM told us that we blew through a number of encounters that he'd intended to be combat-heavy through sheer luck and wiles.

In short, we were told we had to find a place where a pirate captain named Praxis was. Apparently he had some shipment coming to him from a gang in Waterdeep named the Ardent Hounds. Their base was a shady pub on the docks, which we promptly waltzed into. We somehow passed ourselves off as smugglers and managed to get the barkeep (who, it turned out, was a high-ranking member of the Hounds) to meet us concerning an illegal shipment of top-grade weapons we'd brought in. A shipment which was completely non-existent.

We have a connection, a merchant working for one of the Lords of Waterdeep. We managed to get a ton of really crappy weapons through him, and scattered some good ones artfully across the top of the pile when we put them in a crate. Then came an incredibly tense stand-off between us and gang in an abandoned warehouse, and a couple of rolls where the DM checked to see if the guys-with-the-tools from the Hounds realised the ruse. For the final inspection, one of them picked up a ludicrously horribly-made dagger. He rolled a 1. We got off scott-free, and have a meeting with Praxis' agents lined up for next week.

Have you guys ever suffered from a DM whose stated goal was to keep everyone alive and thus told us that we didn't need to determine Hitpoints or Strength or any stats. He'll just tell us to roll a d20 for everything and then say oh but I can't let you fail in Hide attempt etc because you could die from that. Yeah because you can't even look at the sheets that I meticulously read and noterized and the characters that I made and passed to you because you claim that you are used to DMing. You let us use the spec tables for level 20 characters we will not die to ten stupid 1 hp goblins there are 8 of us and one of has the ability to reincarnate and two can raise the dead. WTF even I could do better. I went and pulled out a spare sheet for a level one fighter and was using the stats (and throwing knife) from that and I killed your friggin' giant spider with one throw as melee based warrior because I looked at the stats for it. You said that if we get too close we will die instantly. I made whole campaign over last weekend and you decided that the story has been changed to you are invincible warriors who passed out drunk in a forest. We spent half an hour (real time (and what would you like to do john and cesar and alan (run away)) while I try to convince the DM to let my level 20 fighter with a saving throw vs poison set at one armed with several magic weapons (ranged and melee) fight a level 3 creature (with dragons and liches in the game)) running from your little spider.

Have you tried explaining the problem to him? Often DMs (inexperienced ones, especially) will go to one extreme or the other, making sure everything goes right for the party or foiling them at every turn. Try explaining to him that there's no sense of accomplishment to be gained from victory after victory – he might as well do away with all the numbers and just tell you a story, if that's the way he wants to run the game.

Make sure he knows that everyone is (presumably) there to play the game, and that part of that is accepting that characters will die. If he knows that the players aren't going to have a fit when their characters die (which I have seen happen. It's never fun to do that from the DMs chair). A real threat can ramp up tension, get everyone more invested, and in doing so make the game infinitely more fun.

And if nothing can convince him to change his ways, the best thing to do is give it some time. I'm going to go out on a limb here and guess that he's quite new to DMing. It's not a skill anyone can learn overnight, but it is one that gets much, much better with practice. If pointing out logically and non-confrontationally why you don't like the way he's running the game doesn't help, just provide occasional constructive criticism.

You also mentioned that you thought you could do better yourself – why not try? Don't make into any sort of competition, just say you have something you'd like to try running. If you show him the enjoyment that can come with a challenge, maybe he'll start to understand why you've been asking for one. I would advise not making it too hard though. It sounds like he isn't a big believer in character death, so the last thing you want to do is kill his character and just entrench his position further.

My main problem was that I put a bunch of effort into making characters for all the confirmed attendees and then spares and then got the specs for some decently challenging creatures but he decided that it would be better if we just used sheets that don't list health. The whole point of this first meeting was to teach how to play the system and understand that you have to be ready to lose some characters. We spent the whole game in an encounter because he felt that it is unimportant to add detail and let us explore. Literally his map at one point went branched off four ways back forward and to the right and left he then draws up the map more after one guys goes straight. He draws a hole taking up virtually the whole map and evidently our team cannot see that in broad daylight. He made Gio (the person who always seems to stumble on these (because he is always walking ten spaces ahead)) roll a save or fall in a hole that was uncovered. Then he made us all scatter in every direction by bring back the *invincible* spider. Then he announced that one of guys walking alone had found a house which no one else could go to because we do not know it exists. I just felt like the fact that he just blew off a week of research and just turned the whole thing into run this way then this way then meet up and get split up and run away. I just came out of it feeling like I was the only one with any grasp of the system.

I have no experience but he ?does?. I think he just is not used to the system and needs to read it a bit.

The DM is actually a really good friend and we hangout a lot but it was not a good way to teach the others how to play.

DM: You wake up and quickly notice you are not where you were when you went to sleep.
Me: Am I wearing pants?
DM: Roll to see if you are wearing pants.
Me: Uh... 4?
DM: You are not wearing pants.

Sometimes it doesn't pay to be a smartass. :P
