Things on my Stream - Fanpoint+

Postby Paul » 30 Aug 2014, 10:35

Hey everyone!

As you know, the rest of the crew is away at PAX this weekend, so this Monday (Sept 1) will be another Things on my Stream. If you haven't seen the show before, I usually start with a sort of mini checkpoint, where I talk about some of the silly video game news stories I found during the week.

What I thought might be fun this week is to start earlier (at 12:00 PST), and in addition to talking about the news, I am going to put links to the articles I found into a public google doc and then ask you guys to write some Checkpoint stories for me! If we can, between all of us, come up with 4 or 5 stories, I will quickly do some shoulder graphics, and then attempt to record a full Checkpoint+ using your stories! Will it work? Possibly! I will do as much of the process live on the stream as I can, because you know how that old saying goes: "Everyone likes to see how the sausage is made" :)

To kill some time while the stories are being written, I figure we can do some AskPaul Q&A. If you keep missing the LRRcast call for questions, have a question for me specifically or a question that is too involved for the normal LRRcast format, this is your opportunity to ask it. Think of it as a mini Reddit AMA. I will be taking questions from the chat, but you can also post questions in this thread if you want to make sure it gets seen.

If this all sounds boring to you, that's cool, too 8)
I will start actually playing EVO: The Search for Eden around 2:30-3:00

Is Unskippable improvised or do you watch the scene and you and Graham write a sorta script? Or are you just comedy masters and do it all in one take?

Pretty sure the last one.

Q1) How did you start programming? Was it formal classes or self-taught?

Q2) In the process of making props for various sketches, have you ever accidentally come up with something genuinely functional, if not for whatever purpose the sketch needed it for?
When the upkeep takes longer than the main phase, I know I've done my job well.

What would make a better Checkpoint+ story: A story about one hundred duck-sized horses, or a story about one horse-sized duck?

For a proper question, is there a sketch you have never been able to write/film that's been in your brain for years? If so, what's the reason for it not seeing the light of day?

What do you consider your greatest professional and non-professional achievement?

What is, to your mind, the best game you've ever played (or, failing that, the one that you've most enjoyed)?

If you could trade lives with any other LRR crewmember for the day, who would it be?

If you were to pull a casino heist, who among the LRR crew would you put together for the job?

For context the typical roles are mastermind, grifter (con man), hitter (muscle), hacker, and thief.
It's all over but the crying. And the taxes.

This is kind of a 'big' question, do you think that the game industry is currently in a poor situation. If so, what do you think is really 'wrong' with it, and how can it be fixed?

Speaking of programming, what languages do you know? Which ones do you think are the most useful?

Dr. Graham has said before that each crew member has deeply distinctive writing styles. Can you give some specific examples?

At LRRCon I entrusted Graham with an Aww Muffin/Awesome Muffin wristband as a reward for the first person to solve my page in the LRR 10-year anniversary thank-you book. Has anyone claimed that yet?

Do any of you have or plan on getting a RetroN 5 (NES/SNES/Famicon/Genesis/GBA w/HDMI & upscaling to 720p). I understand they're hard to come by in Canada.

Also do you (Paul) have 5? ;)

I am considering moving to BC in the near future.

Can you tell us about Victoria, the good and bad from your perspective?

Here's the original Saints Row 4 DLC script, for those interested:

“From Hell’s Heart I Wub” - Hot off the presses from PAX, Volition has announced a new standalone DLC for Saints Row 4. “Gat Out Of Hell” will be an expansion based around the characters Gat and Kinzie diving into Hell to save the Saints’ Boss. The expansion will feature a new map, Hell of course, as well as new hell themed powers and weapons for the players to play with. Because honestly, using a weaponized version of Sloth is the obvious evolution of the dubstep gun. Really, given this series, I don’t think anyone is going to be surprised by the fact the Saints are going to hell. But the question I’m most curious about is… where are the Saints going to go from here? First space, now hell. I’m just looking forward to when we’ll get to go skateboarding on Uranus.

Overall, I'm glad to see it made it into the whole thing. Though I missed not seeing the Uranus joke make it in. I felt it fitted SR4 very well. :p

From what I've seen, the RetroN 5 is just a emulator system that utilizes game cartridges (as it pulls the game & save data from the game cart itself) to avoid the legal issue with emulation. Therefore, using an emulator via PC is just as good, just without the hardware hassle.
