Magnum Rewatch Ep 19 - Dead Man's Channel

Postby Kathleen » 09 Jun 2015, 09:45

Magnum is hired to track down an archeologist after he goes missing while diving in the cursed Nihoa channel. Kathleen makes a variety of goat noises.

1. Excellent goat noises Kathleen

2. When I was an undergrad working in my professor's physics lab, she kept framed photos of all of her assistants. In fact, it was required that we go to a professional photographer once we joined the lab. Once we moved our lab to a main hallway I got a lot of people asking me if I was that guy with a portrait in the physics building.

That professor also got me an office, which the department refused to recognize so I printed out my own name plate for. I was also allowed to be a coauthor on our paper as an undergrad. She was a good boss.

I hate having 'hidden treasure' plotlines in a status quo series like Magnum. The entire time I just end up thinking, "How are they going to avoid having a treasure, or is there going to be one that is lost somehow?". I guess it's like a hostage situation with main cast members, but normally that only lasts 10mins, whereas a treasure plot lasts an episode. I was really happy that this plot very quickly got rid of the treasure plot and didn't play it out for "suspense". It's just something that can ruin a TV episode for me, and most likely why I don't watch status quo type shows anymore.

Otherwise, decent episode. Also, still no 4th wall breaks.

To answer Graham's question about the volcano diety, it's Pele. Just like the goddess that you guys saved during Temple of the Lava Bears.

Was I the only one tempted to send Graham complicated bomb making instructions?

Re: Rick identifying the bomb making equipment. It's possible that Rick was the demolition and weapons expert in Magnum's Seal team squad.

I believe all SEALs receive demolition training.

I didn't want to assume that, but I wouldn't be surprised either. Perhaps Rick had more training and was their specialist, just like TC was their go-to pilot.

Love the podcast but had a plot question on this one. Prof. Martinez's asst is a native Hawaiian yes? Why would he help cover up proof that Hawaiians figured something out on their own? As a proud native, it seems like he should be helping the good guys bring the tablet to light. Just saying

You mean you didn't? Oops.
Well, do you want an ethical solution or an effective one?

I think it's because white people weren't supposed to be in the area at all.

Makes sense I suppose. Maybe he didn't know about the tablet :)

When did Magnum say he hates being called P.I.? Maybe I missed it. But I know he constantly corrects Private Eye to (Private) Investigator and the latter is what the abbreviation stands for in the first place.
