Just Hacking Off Limbs

Postby Graham » 13 Mar 2015, 10:57

Meet Bryce Journey and his Euro-style board game, Aguirre. Possibly the most intense subject of all of the finalists, Aguirre focuses on Lope de Aguirre, an accused murderer living in the Spanish South American colonies during the 16th century.

My main perception of Aguirre comes from the Herzog movie.

Also yay, Kathleen! I was about to ask how the playtesters are recruited, but I checked the video and it briefly says: "We asked friends from the industry to playest the games and tell us what they think." So it is all friends and friends of friends, and not so much standing at the convention and grabbing passerby and saying, "Hey you want to be in a video we're shooting for the internet? We promise it's not porn."

I've recognized some of the playtesters, and looked up the credentials of some others. So yes, these are all friends/friends of friends of the production crew.

Just grabbed the playtesters from this episode, and you have:
1. Jenn Baker (Game Designer)
2. Kathleen De Vere (LoadingReadyRun)
3. Bruce Stringer (Designer Team Weasel Games)
4. Keith Baker (Game Designer)
5. Derek Guder (Events Manager, Gen Con)

Derek Guder would have helped coordinate Tabletop Deathmatch, and certainly be familiar to and have previously worked with many people in the board game industry; Kieth Baker designed the Eberron campaign setting for D&D; Team Weasel Games was in last year's Tabletop Deathmatch; Kathleen is Kathleen; and a 30-second Google search didn't find this specific Jenn Baker (not an uncommon name), but I take the on-screen credits at their word.

Aguire was the only game out of the 8 where I had less clue about what the game was about after the brief explanation, than I did before starting to watch the video. I'm sure everything would make sense if I had the rules and pieces in front of me, but it didn't feel instantly accessible like the other 7 did.
