Well Beej kind of was right about Warau Salesman NEW. The original Warau Salesman was a manga from the late 70s with a 100 plus episode anime from the late 80s. Even had a live action Drama in the 90s.

So I was curious about Little witch Academy and wanted to give it a try.
I started watching the first episode, which seemed a bit on the long side, and assumed I'd be able to pick up the story as I went along.
Long story short, seems like I watched the Enchanted Parade special, instead of ep. 1.

You've probably already figured this out, but there were two short films that got made first, before it was turned into a full series. The first was a product of a young animator's project that runs in Japan and the second, I believe, was kickstarted by fans since they liked the original so much. Then the studio green-lit a series given the interest. The one you watched is the second special, which draws on the first quite a bit, so I can image it being a little confusing without the context.

Well I say confusing, but the shiny rod thing is really the only bit not referenced or explained.

Where does it fit in the continuity, now that I'm watching the series?

I haven't seen the series myself, so I'm not actually sure.

Well had I listened to the episode I'd have saved myself a lot of trouble.

Since I hadn't known the show it didn't sink in :
The first and second movie consist of a sort of alternate time line, only not really. Same characters with events that might have happened but didn't.

So my only mistake was watching the enchanted parade before the first movie.

Little witch academia.
What was that phrase they used on the show? "pulling the Trigger"? I damn.
