Warning lights are flashing down at Quality Control,
somebody threw a spanner and they threw him in the hole.
There's rumors in the loading bay and anger in the town,
somebody blew the whistle and the walls came down.
There's a meeting in the boardroom, they're trying to trace the smell.
There's leaking in the washroom, there's a sneak in personnel.
Somewhere in the corridors someone was heard to sneeze,
goodness me could this be Industrial Disease?

The caretaker was crucified for sleeping at his post,
they're refusing to be pacified, it's him they blame the most.
The watchdog's got rabies, the foreman's got fleas,
and everyone's concerned about Industrial Disease.
There's panic on the switchboard, tongues are tied in knots,
some come out in sympathy, some come out in spots.
Some blame the management, some the employees,
and everybody knows it's the Industrial Disease.

The work force is disgusted, downs tools and walks,
innocence is injured experience just talks.
Everyone seeks damages and everyone agrees,
that these are "classic symptoms of a monetary squeeze."
On ITV and BBC they talk about the curse,
philosophy is useless theology is worse.
History boils over there's an economics freeze,
sociologists invent words that mean 'Industrial Disease.'

Doctor Parkinson declared "I'm not surprised to see you here;
You've got smokers cough from smoking, brewer's droop from drinking beer.
I don't know how you came to get the Betty Davis knees,
but worst of all, young man, you've got Industrial Disease."
He wrote me a prescription, he said "You are depressed,
but I'm glad you came to see me to get this off your chest.
Come back and see me later - <ding> next patient please;
Send in another victim of Industrial Disease."

I go down to Speaker's Corner, I'm thunderstruck;
they got free speech, tourists, police in trucks.
Two men say they're Jesus, one of them must be wrong.
There's a protest singer singing a protest song - he says:
"They wanna have a war to keep us on our knees,
They wanna have a war to keep their factories,
They wanna have a war to stop us buying Japanese,
They wanna have a war to stop Industrial Disease.
They're pointing out the enemy to keep you deaf and blind.
They wanna sap your energy, incarcerate your mind.
They give you Rule Britannia, gassy beer, page three,
two weeks in Espana and Sunday striptease."
Meanwhile the first Jesus says "I'd cure it soon;
Abolish monday mornings and friday afternoons."
The other one's on a hunger strike, he's dying by degrees;
How come Jesus gets Industrial Disease?

Thirty years old, and mainly concerned with the Death of British Industry, but still a lot of it is apt today.

...not sure if that's good or bad. :?

Strangely, what with the financial climate causing everyone to realise that actually making stuff is a more reliable source of income, Britain's manufacturing sector isactually on the up at the moment.

Console me in my darkest hour
Convince me that the truth is always grey
Caress me in your velvet chair
Conceal me from the ghosts you cast away

I'm in no hurry
You go run and tell your friends I'm losing touch
Fill their heads with rumors of impending doom
It must be true

Console me in my darkest hour
And tell me that you always hear my cries
I wonder what you've got conspired
I'm sure it dons a consolation prize

I'm in no hurry
You go run and tell your friends I'm losing touch
Fill the night with stories, the legend grows
Of how you got lost
But you made your way back home
You sold your soul
Like a roamin' vagabond, yeah

I heard you from the wishing well
In the city
Console me in my darkest hour
Then you throw me down

I'm in no hurry
You go run and tell your friends I'm losing touch
Fill your crown with rumors
Impending doom
It must be true

But you made your way back home
You sold your soul like a roamin' vagabond
And about how you got lost
But you made your way back home
An allegiance dead and gone

I'm losing touch

Is it 'Roman' vagabond? I always heard it as 'roamin'

That probably makes more sense, but I did have to hack together a couple different sites' worth of slightly-wrong lyrics to get this version. I'll change it.

I woke up today
To find myself in the other place
With a trail of footprints
From where i ran away
It seems everything i've heard
Just might be true
And you know me
(well you think you do)
Sometimes, i have everything-
Yet i wish i felt something

Do you know how far this has gone?
Just how damaged have i become?
When i think i can overcome
It runs even deeper

And in a dream i'm a different me
With a perfect you
We fit perfectly
And for once in my life i feel complete-
And i still want to ruin it
Afraid to look
As clear as day
This plan has long been underway

I hear them call
I cannot stay
The voice inviting me away

Do you know how far this has gone?
Just how damaged have i become?
When i think i can overcome
It runs even deeper
Everything that matters is gone
All the hands of hope have withdrawn
Could you try to help me hang on?
It runs...

I straight
I won't crack
On my way
And i can't turn back
I'm okay
I'm on track
On my way
And i can't turn back
I stayed
On this track
Gone too far
And i can't come back
I stayed
On this track
Lost my way
Can't come back
Eschew obfuscation.

This

I know you're supposed to stick to lyrics, but I am thinking of this version specifically. Plus, it's just generally awesome.

It's the perfect time of year...
Somewhere far away from here.
I feel fine enough, I guess,
considering everything's a mess.

There's a restaurant down the street,
Where hungry people like to eat.
I could walk but I'll just drive -
it's colder than it looks outside.

It's like a dream; you try to rememb'r but it's gone
Then you try to scream but it only comes out as a yawn,
When you try to see the world beyond your front door.

Take your time 'cause the way I rhyme's gonna make you smile
When you realize that a guy my size might take a while
Just to figure out what all this is for.

It's the perfect time of day
To throw all your cares away.
Put the sprinkler on the lawn,
And run through with my gym shorts on.

Take a drink right from the hose,
And change into some drier clothes.
Climb the stairs up to my room,
And sleep away the afternoon.

It's like a dream; you try to rememb'r but it's gone (pinch me)
Then you try to scream but it only comes out as a yawn, (pinch me)
When you try to see the world beyond your front door. (I'm still asleep)

Take your time 'cause the way I rhyme's gonna make you smile (please God)
When you realize that a guy my size might take a while (tell me)
Just to figure out what all this is for. (I'm still asleep)

Pinch me, (Pinch me)
Pinch me, (Pinch me)
'Cause I'm still asleep. ('Cause I'm still asleep)

Please God, (Please God)
Tell me, (Tell me)
That I'm still asleep. (That I'm still asleep)

On and evening such as this,
It's hard to tell if I exist.
If I pack the car and leave this town,
Who'll notice that I'm not around?

I could hide out under there;
I just made you say "underwear".
I could leave but I'll just stay;
All my stuff's here anyway.

Try to figure out what all this is for. (I'm still asleep)

Try to see the world beyond your front door. (I'm still asleep)

Try to figure out what all this is for. (I'm still asleep)

Oh, no. Don't pretend I didn't see
You roll your eyes at my gaming tee
Don't know if you can read or if you've seen
The sweet piece in this week's Wired magazine
The latest trend has hit its peak
They say that geek's becomin' chic
So now you're out of style as you can be
And I'm in vogue, so you can bite me

I don’t ever wanna have to try
Though I lie , it never flies
I don’t ever wanna have to die
But deep inside , the death, it hides
And I never wanna clarify
And justify, so I run and hide
And I never wanna signify
So I pacify all the hate inside

In olden days, a glimpse of stocking
Was looked on as something shocking.
Now Heaven knows!
Anything goes!

Good authors, too, who once knew better words,
Now only use four-letter words writing prose,
'Cause anything goes.

So though I'm not a great romancer,
I know what you're 'bout to answer when I propose:
"Anything goes."

May I say before this record spins to a close:
I want you to know
Anything goes!
It's all over but the crying. And the taxes.

I sit here clutching useless lists,
keys for doors that don't exist
I crack my teeth on pearls
I tear into the history
Show me what it means to me in this world
Yeah, in this world

'Cause I am due for a miracle
I'm waiting for a sign
I'll stare straight into the sun
And I won't close my eyes
Till I understand or go blind

I see the parts but not the whole
I study saints and scholars both
No perfect plan unfurls
Do I trust my heart or just my mind
Why is truth so hard to find in this world
Yeah in this world

'Cause I am due for a miracle
I'm waiting for a sign
I'll stare straight into the sun
And I won't close my eyes
Till I understand or go blind (till I understand or go blind)

Tiny heart, stuck inside yourself
When will you open up for me?
I love you so, want to meet you again
Before one of us must go

Your lips touched every hand but mine
In their shadows you slept fine
When will you get back to me
So we can rest?

Tiny heart, you're not by yourself
When will you recognize the beat
Of my own heart making your blood flow
So that your chest can rise and fall?

Your lips touched every hand but mine
In their shadows you slept fine
When will you get back to me
So we can rest?

You will never know
What you have done to me
You will never know
Losing love from me
And you will never know
A single day alone

Tiny heart, stuck inside yourself
When will you open up?

Your lips touched every hand but mine
In their shadows you slept fine
When will you get back to me
So we can rest?

When you choose me
I'm waiting for you
Always waiting

So, so you think you can tell
Heaven from Hell
Blue skies from pain
Can you tell a green field
From a cold steel rail?
A smile from a veil?

Do you think you can tell?
Did they get you to trade
Your heroes for ghosts?
Hot ashes for trees?
Hot air for a cool breeze?
Cold comfort for change?
Did you exchange a walk-on part in the war
For a lead role in a cage?

How I wish, how I wish you were here
We're just two lost souls swimmin' in a fishbowl
Year after year
Runnin' over the same old ground
What have we found?
The same old fears
Wish you were here

I don't like cheating but I wrote this 10 minutes ago.

I sang when I fled
Escaped
I bled
I was drained
From her

And all I heard went silent.
The screams inside grew violent.
I'm surprised I've stayed intact.
In a heartbeat I'd turn and run back.
We put the brick on the accelerator.

Now, all you trick-or-treat'ers, come listen to me good
'bout a grave that's in a graveyard in this very neighbourhood
Contains a boy who died this very night so long ago
And now candy wrappers mysteriously appear around his stone!

♫You know it's Halloween, y'know it's kinda scary
The way the ghosts come floatin' out of the cemetery
Slidin' through the dirt, all cold n' moldy and
The only thing that they can think about is how....to get yer candy!

"Trick or Treat!" Hear the children cryin'
But who's that pale boy at the back with the antique suit and tie on?
When you passed out the candy it seemed to fade into his hand
And look! There's a clump of fresh dirt on the spot where he did stand!

♫Ohhh, it's Halloween, y'know it's kinda scary
The way the ghosts come floatin' out of the cemetery
Slidin' through the dirt, all cold n' moldy and
The only thing that they can think about is how....to get yer candy!

I heard about this kid, who collected lots of sweets
And with a flashlight, in his bed he counted out his treats
When they found him in the morning, the bags of candy they were gone
A clump of fresh dirt by his bed and the flashlight was still on!

♫Ohhh, it's Halloween, y'know it's kinda scary
The way the ghosts come floatin' out of the cemetery
Slidin' through the dirt, all cold n' moldy and
The only thing that they can think about is how...

Now each and every child, behind a mask is hid
But which one d'ya think's a ghost and which one is a kid?
But in the scary darkness when the leaves are blowin' through
Has it occurred to you the only one that's not a ghost is you?

...LA-la-la, la-la la-la la-la
La la la la la la-la la la la la-la-la-la
La-la la la la, la la la la-la la
La la-la la la la la la la-la laaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa...La-la-laaaaa!♫

And so you trick-or-treat'ers, take heed of what I said
And leave your candy here with me, don't take it up to bed
I'll protect you from the ghoulies and the ghosties and the beasties
Though you might lose that Snickers bar, and - ooh! Look; Reese's Pieces!

♫You know it's Halloween, y'know it's kinda scary
The way the ghosts come floatin' out of the cemetery♫

Now get on up to bed...but grab that broom before you do
And sweep up this clump of fresh dirt that fell off of my.....pants!

♫LA-la-la, la-la la-la la-la
La-la la-la la-la la-la LAAAAAAAAA!♫

Wow, it's been a long time since someone posted in this thread. Way too long.

Allow me to rectify that.

---

Give me a job, give me security
Give me a chance to survive
I'm just a poor soul in the unemployment line
My god, I'm hardly alive

My mother and father, my wife and my friends
You'd see them laugh in my face
But I've got the power, and I've got the will
I'm not a charity case, I'll take those

Long nights, impossible odds
Keeping my eye to the keyhole
If it takes all that to be just what I am
Well, I'm gonna be a blue collar man

Make me an offer that I can't refuse
Make me respectable, man
This is my last time in the unemployment line
So like it or not, I'll take those

Long nights, impossible odds
Keeping my back to the wall
If it takes all night to be just what I am
Well, I'm gonna be a blue collar man

Keeping my mind on a better life
Where happiness is only a heartbeat away
Paradise, can it be all I heard it was?
I close my eyes, and maybe I'm already there

I'll take those long nights, impossible odds
Keeping my back to the wall
All that to be just what I am
Well, I'm gonna be a blue collar man

Do do do do do do do do
(You don't understand)
Do do do do do do do do
Do do do do do do do do
Do do do do do do do do

I'll take those long nights, impossible odds
Keeping my eye to the keyhole
If it takes all night to be just who I am
Well, I vow to be a blue collar, gotta be a blue collar
Gonna be a blue collar man

(All right!)

Believe it

I can't decide
Whether you should live or die
Oh, you'll probably go to heaven
Please don't hang your head and cry
No wonder why
My heart feels dead inside
It's cold and hard and petrified
Lock the doors and close the blinds
We're going for a ride
