A few minutes ago, as my local radio station's midday show was going off of the air, they played a soundbite from a news story somewhere. Apparently some guy was making a big hubbub about how he found a mouse in his can of Mountain Dew.

Oh, you just wait. It gets worse.

Pepsi, the company that makes Mountain Dew, issued an official response saying that such a thing would be impossible because, and I quote, "the mouse would have completely dissolved".

Now, I have but one thought on the matter. *ahem* What the fuck?! That is fucking horrifying, even more so because Pepsi itself stated it as iron-clad fact beyond reproach as a PR statement.

Just... how many dissolved furry animals have I drank in my lifetime, Pepsi? Is there something you haven't been telling me?

I have been searching on this and apparently there have been several (at least 9 in the U.S. lawsuits filed against soda companies over 'mice' or 'rats' in their products over the past 4 years.

The first few were dismissed because the mountain dew or monster would both dissolve the bones and most of the fur leaving only bits of legs/toes and most of the tail because of its acidic nature. Probably a copy cat lawsuit.

The rat parts are part of a promotion. Collect enough of them and they give you a lifetime supply of moutain dew.

I tried that, but the lack of meaty bits meant I just ended up with a horrible rat teeth-leg-taily monstrosity. It was pretty cool and I showed it to all of my friends until a nice man from the mountain dew people came to visit me and told me about the special promotion. Except they took away my rat toy. I miss ol' Rat Tangle. He was my bestest friend.

Ah yeah, I see your problems. One) you shouldn't have taken it around and shown your friends. Instead, bringing them in to a special room, one by one, to meet Rat Tangle would have been best.
Problem two) you need to look in all of Pepsi's products for the complete range of parts. Mountain Dew and Monster, as you know, have the bones and toes and bits of tail. Look in their other ranges to get the complete set!

I... Just... How is it that mountain dew would dissolve a rat but not pepsi itself? That seems bizare considering mountain dew is really just what happens when you molest lemonaid.

NO! BAD GEOFF! Don't you talk about Sprite!

But seriously, how do they know he didn't just put a half dissolved rat in a can and call it a lawsuit?

The reason they know what would happen is they have a billion dollar company to protect so as soon as the legal department showed up with the lawsuit the R&D department got 100 dead rats and 100 containers full of mountain dew, added one to the other and waited.

Their results were nothing left of the animal after 47 days and very little left after 7 to 10.

Im just guessing based on how they have been responding to these lawsuits.

Also, the effects of acid on organic material are relatively well-known, so it's simple enough to compare the pH levels of Mountain Dew against previous studies on acids in the same range.

Erm, yes and no. Different acids at the same pH behave differently from one another. We can presume that we're probably talking about phosphoric acid if it's soda, and there are studies about that, but those more than likely don't include the addition of all the various other things in that solution nor do they likely account for pressurization and likely acid-complexes with the carbonic acid formed from all the dissolved CO2 gas.

You could make an educated guess from just Phosphoric acid studies, but you would really need to try it with the soda to say anything conclusive.

A giant spider just ran over my foot. It had to have been at least 7.5cm across including legs. The body was approx 2 - 3cm long. Was gonna take a photo to put here but my housemate killed it. It only have 7 legs though. Creepy thing, touched my foot.

If this thread has taught me anything, you should try to dissolve that spider in Mountain Dew. Apparently, the marketing of it as an solvent has been completely ignored.

This picture creeps the fuck out of me. To spare you looking if you don't want to, I'll describe it; it's a child's skull with the front of the jaw and upper gums removed so you can see the adult teeth inside the bone.

It's very disturbing to me, yet a completely natural thing we've all gone through.
