context helps wrote:A Metropolitan Police spokesman confirmed that a 27-year-old woman had died in Camden and that the cause of death was as yet unexplained.

London Ambulance Service said it had been called to the flat at 1554 BST and sent two vehicles but the woman died.

The troubled singer had a long battle with drink and drugs which overshadowed her recent musical career. She pulled out of a comeback tour last month.

Unless you are taking your own bodyweight in drugs each hour every day i think you're safe.

Also... People still cared about her? I thought she was just a quicker version of most popstars, shows up and sings some crap songs, becomes an idiot for a week, then i never heard of her again until this thread.

I don't understand your shock. She battled mental illness, severe drug and alcohol addiction and refused to get help most of the time. She was a mess her entire adult life. Her tiny body was shutting down from all the abuse already in 2008.

She's younger than you, but how many nights have you spent with crack cocain and booze binges? You're not in any danger of going the same way she did. If it wasn't an overdose I bet you it was some type of organ failure from a tiny cold or something.

Doesn't make it any less sad, or seem like less of a waste. Maybe it will open up peoples eyes to the severity of mental illness and addiction.

i'm always a bit shocked when people i'm aware of die, especially if they're younger than me. well shocked, surprised, these are words. it's one thing to say that if you don't change your lifestyle you end up dead, it's another thing to see it actually happen.

I'm hoping that the events in Norway will continue to overshadow this.

I am not surprised, and as she basically paved her way to her own demise she does not have much sympathy from me. Even her own mother was asking about details for her funeral.

Its as Siobhan said. This is sad and all but given how her life had been going (especially the way her comeback was faltering) it doesn't really come from left field. At least she's good company in the 27 Club.

She was a waste even before she died. Yes, I know, I'm a terrible bastard, but when you fuck yourself up like she did, for so long, an in the face of all the attempts at help...

Well, there's only one person to blame for that, and it 'ain't Richard Nixon.

Also, I always thought she was a rather over-rated artist. Basically; no sympathy from the Jester's court. :P

I thought she was older.

I heard about this just 10 minutes ago, it was on the news after they released more information about the Norway shooting.

@Thread

We are aware that mental illness and drug addiction aren't 'choices', yes?

You do choose to try the drugs, but you do not choose to become dependant on them and kill yourself through overuse.

It would be very strange if you couldn't see the distinction between the two.

Well, I hope you never make any silly mistakes, Geoff.

And, to reiterate:

Drug addiction and mental illness aren't 'choices'.

Her death was not in vain, for the first I know what it is like to look into my crap reserve, and find nothing to give.

If someone starts taking that many drugs for that long while refusing help, I have no sympathy or concern, maybe for the family and friends who were forced by the selfish being to endure watching the downfall, but none for Winehouse.

@Deedles

True, but I'm going to assume a long term heroin addict (with a mental illness, I'm going to keep banging this point home) isn't thinking too clearly. If they were, they probably wouldn't be a long term heroin addict.

My point is, you shouldn't blame the victim.

@semysane

I see the point you're trying to make, but that's not a good comparison.

Drugs aren't at all like pointing a gun at your head because they don't automatically kill you.

Some people can handle drugs, a lot of people in fact. It's why drug users outnumber drug addicts. Some can't handle them, and some get addicted.

She was part of the minority, which is unfortunate, and unpredictable.
