Running for Desert Bus

Postby r3lai » 12 May 2012, 21:38

Hello Folks,

Long time LRR watcher, first time poster. It's nice to meet your acquaintance.

My name is Raymond, and I'm a fan of LRR and their charitable efforts of Desert Bus. I've donated in the past, but this year I'm planning to do more than just donating and enjoying the ensuing entertainment. Graham has given me the green light to make this public, so here goes!

In 2 weeks on May 27, 2012, I will be participating in the Ottawa Half Marathon, and I'm dedicating my run to Desert Bus. I'm calling it "Running for Desert Bus: The drivers are sitting. I'm running for them".

You'll find more details here: http://www.nerdandfood.com/running-for-desert-bus-2/. This is my tiny effort to kickstart Desert Bus 6.

I would love your support, even if it means just reading my blog and keeping up with my training progress leading up to the race. I would very much appreciate it if fellow LRR fans can spread the word amongst your friends and colleagues.

Feel free to reach out and ask any questions!

Doctors say that running for the bus is good exercise.

Being related to a doctor, I can confirm that this statement is correct.

What you need to do when you see a camera is to stop and carmelldansen.

Best of luck on your run, Ray!

If there are LRR fans in Ottawa and would like to park themselves somewhere on the parade route, I'll keep an eye out and attempt a Ridiculously Photogenic Guy.

I've toyed with the idea of making myself more visible by running with my LRR t-shirt on (bought this year at PAX East 2012), but running with anything other than a synthetic "technical" shirt is just folly. There's... the chance of bleeding in the "chestal" area and it gets extremely uncomfortable.

You can always add a LRR logo to a tech shirt- you can paint it on with fabric paint or follow a home screen printing tutorial like this one:

You could probably find a tech shirt with a maple leaf on it, and a cape wouldn't be terrible to run in... that'd be a good idea, actually.

That's a great idea. Alas, I'm flying to Boston/NY for business this coming week, and it'll be tight to fit in a home silk screening in a short amount of time.

Do you know if there are commercial silk screeners willing to do one-offs in and around Ottawa?

I fully support this kind of behavior.
~I'm probably not serious~
Oh and you can just call me Dave.
No need for the whole screen name.

They're closed today. I'll give them a call when I have a chance this week.

There are copyright issues with "borrowing" logos... so if I can get an emergency silkscreen done I'll have "RfDB" screened on an existing tech shirt. Thanks for the great ideas guys.

Bingo.

I found a place that does Vinyl printing on technical shirts in Ottawa.
http://www.customizeit.ca/. They'll do the printing while I wait.

I'll get this done next week.

I'll have "RfDB" printed on the front of my red Toronto half marathon shirt I got last year. I should be... pretty visible.

Thanks for the great ideas guys!

Clearly, you won't get a quality time unless someone is behind you in the course attempting to run you down with a very speed limited bus.

That's awesome, I've never heard of a place that didn't take at least 24 hours to get that kind of stuff done. I'm always aggravated that they can't do a 30 second job in 30 seconds while I'm there.

If only they allow Desert Busses on the race route... alas.

To be fair, it's only a half-marathon, but I thank you for the sentiment and the good wishes.

And... I'm back from my business trips, which means there's only 1 week left before the Run for Desert Bus!

I'm planning to head out tomorrow to get one of my technical shirts vinyl printed with "RfDB". It's going to be sweet. I'll post pictures once it's done.

I've also just completed my last long run before my half marathon. If you guys are curious, the details of my training runs are located here: http://www.nerdandfood.com/run-for-desert-bus/.

Please spread the word of the Run for Desert Bus, and donate generously if you can! The ChipIn link on my blog goes directly to Child's Play, so you can be assured there's no hanky-panky going on with your hard-earned cash. If anyone has any questions, ask them here and I'll be sure to monitor and reply!
