Feminism general thread
Re: Feminism general thread
The onion occasionally falls into Poe territory, but generally they're pretty good about hitting the "absurd to the point of actual parody" side of the line, in my experience.

I admit, I found the piece hilarious. That was dead on to my mind.

Re: Feminism general thread
Anybody have a Canada-friendly link to the Sarkeesian interview and #GG bit on the Colbert Report?

Re: Feminism general thread
It was okay.
Anita seemed to be playing it safe, maybe so vitriol thrown at her is lower than normal. Hopefully that does die down.
Has Anita done longer in depth interviews or are they normally short ones.

The length was pretty normal for Colbert's little side-interviews like this... long enough for the guest to get their sound-bite points out there, not really long enough to go deep into anything. But it gets the point across. The length probably wasn't in any way in Sarkeesian's control... she just had to do what she could with the space she was given.

I Can Tolerate Anything Except the Outgroup.
Long read (very long), but I think it offers some much-needed perspective.

Re: Feminism general thread
I lost my concentration and couldn't keep reading after a while, because I felt like he was taking a long time to arrive to any sort of point, and while a point isn't always necessary I usually expect there to be something educational about the text. Which I didn't really find here since it felt mostly like his own conclusions and theories, based on stuff he'd read.
From what I read it was well written, but, yeah, I need something to hold my attention, since its span isn't the longest.
Edit: That said, I did find the little story about forgiveness at the start to be interesting.

Re: Feminism general thread
I don't agree with everything Sarkeesian brings up in her videos, but at least I respected her for presenting herself in a professional, level headed way, and for presenting the information as discussion topics rather than preaching.
That respect ended today with the twitter sharing of the Hitler rant video where the subtitles portrayed him as a GamerGate supporter having a tantrum. I don't care what you're stance is, you don't participate in a shit-flinging contest and come out smelling any nicer than the other guy.

Now, I haven't seen that version of the video, but everyone knows that that thing has been re-edited with new subtitles many, many times and is consistently meant as satire, right?

I've found that "everyone knows" everything until that's proven wrong.

Yeah 'Downfall Hitler' has been around for years, and has been made about a whole variety of things from pizza delivery times to ipad releases.
Still, every time an internet meme's posted is going to be someone's first time seeing it, I suppose.

Re: Feminism general thread
Just trying to say that common knowledge isn't as common as one would believe. "Everyone knows" about the Hitler clip... except those who don't. "Everyone knows" about what happens when you mix Diet Coke and Mentos... except those who don't.
I think we should give up on trying to say what "everyone" knows.

Re: Feminism general thread
Yes, I've known about that clip and have seen several versions of it before. The difference is that most of the other versions I've seen were meant to be funny and were usually on subjects that weren't loaded to hell and back.
I just find this version to be bad.

I really need to watch Downfall. It's one of those WW2 films I haven't got round to, another would be Where Eagles Dare.

It seems like there you went from incredulous to rude, Metcarfre. Want to dial it back?
