On this day in 1867 the British colonies of North America were confederated to form the Dominion of Canada. On this day in 1997 the sovereignty of Hong Kong was transferred from Britain to China. Two acts of decolonisation separated by one hundred and thirty very long years. Twenty years on Handover Day remains contentious enough to be difficult to celebrate (now where'd that yellow brolly go?) so instead here's to one hundred and fifty years of Greater Canuckistan.
To CBC Hockey Night, and Marshall McLuhan's global village, and Bob & Doug McKenzie in the Great White North eh.
To poutine, and Nanaimo bars, and flipping nothing while yr mate flips double on a Floyd's Mahoney.
To Lester Pearson's bowtie, to the vintage year 1867, to the White House going up in flames.
To Canada.
1867 and 1997.
