Fight the Future 07 - The Hunger Games

Postby Paul » 23 Jun 2015, 07:27

The dark YA dystopia that started the craze, as Katniss Everdeen fights to survive in the arena against other murderous teens, armed only with her bow. Meanwhile, love interest Peeta is armed only with his ability to disguise himself as mud. This week Dan, Paul and special guest Gaby volunteer as tribute for The Hunger Games.

There appears to be no new thing under the sun.

Is it fair to make this comparison
5 parts Running Man
3 parts Battle Royal
1 part depression Era Mid west US
1 part Truman show

The Argument is well made in the The Running Man/Hunger Games MUSICAL SPECTACULAR on Youtube. Be warned it is not Canadian friendly being a little Blue https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rwb2glCshzY

And Running Man came out 24 years after this story by Robert Sheckley, which also nicely foreshadows The Hunger Games' smarmy tv commentators:

You can always play that game, but I've never quite understood the point of it. Everything is a remix. For me it's the depth of the commitment to the world that matters (which is why Divergent, the movie at least, strikes me as a shallow ripoff)

I must also say that Canadians can also appreciate a touch of the risque, as this excerpt from the documentary South Park: Bigger Longer Uncut demonstrates:

(I've discovered Terrence and Philip is many young Italian's first point of reference when then think of canada!)

If you have to say 'this is X' using more than one movie, then it's not 'just X'. The whole is more than its parts, it's how they interact. Even a retelling that is 'basically X' can bring something of value, as it is told through a different lens. That isn't to say you can't have a lazy or poorly written piece of literature or film that tries to leech from an existing work, but only the minority of things that take inspiration from something else are worthless.

Talk to anyone that does something creative - movie/tv writers, authors, game designers, traditional artists, metalcraft/jewelry, or clothing designers, and the list goes on - everything you do is inspired by something else. Hell, take paths that have more 'profound' results - mathematics, teaching, or athletics - everything we do as a human is predicated by our experiences; nothing we do is untouched by those who came before us.

Thread is a tad old, but the FtF podcast drew me (back) to the forums. >.>
