42 - Carcinogen Cola
42 - Carcinogen Cola
If you drink 1000 cans of cola in a day you should probably see a doctor.

That episode made me chuckle pretty hard. I think it was more Kathleens complete off colour comments that just came out of know were.
Re: 42 - Carcinogen Cola
I think I love the fact that, not only did Kathleen crack up at her gloriously tasteless joke, but you left that part in.
Er, well, she did, since the credits say she edited it. So, yeah, I love that she left that part in.

Re: 42 - Carcinogen Cola
That whole cola thing isn't too surprising. I see a lot of products (headphones, cell phone cases) that are marked saying that California has found them carcinogenic and I should probably wash my hands after using them. I tend not to take them too seriously.
Re: 42 - Carcinogen Cola
It's certainly not bad to label things that might be carcinogenic if consumed in more than moderate amounts...but within realistic limits! If the intake required was on the order of ten cans a day, I could see reason for concern. Most people don't drink that much cola, but some might. Maaaaybe even a hundred.
But a thousand? Even assuming it was possible to consume that much liquid in a 24 hour period, anyone who did would be dead from osmotic shock. Cancer's not a concern when all of your cells have burst.

She is a very nice person in person, but that is the sort of thing she would say in public, say, in front of a panel at PAX East with a mother and child in the audience where the mother is telling her to go ahead and tell the joke anyway.

Re: 42 - Carcinogen Cola
Iirc, California set very low bars on 'carcinogenic dose' on the assumption that a) people consume as much of z as they can, b) it is possible for z to accidentally have 10x as much of the dose due to manufacturing error, c) people who handle the stuff in their work-place will be exposed to a lot more of it then anyone else. They may well have gone a little too far in that tho.
Additionally Cola is often distributed in Syrup form, to be dispensed diluted on site. And that stuff is already a pretty nasty thing to handle.

Apparently not, because I'm at least somewhat sure Hosk isn't a psychiatrist, and he just did. :r
But also yeah.
Re: 42 - Carcinogen Cola
Without reaching insanely high amounts like 1,000 cans, please still don't try to drink as much liquid as possible. It's possible to dilute your blood too much and die, even if the liquid is water.
If it's not water, I can only imagine the huge amounts of sugar only make it worse.
I guess you should drink physiological serum if you want to drink lots for the heck of it.
Anyways, how do they enforce the hobo wifi hotspot? A machine that gives wifi when you put coins, like an Internet jukebox? If so, other people can enjoy it too. A password given to you? But then you could reuse it and cheat. I'm really curious how they decided to do it.

Send a text, get password. Might have been a one-use password. I don't know exactly how it worked, but I do know you had to (well, I think it was required) make a donation. All money went to the sponsored homeless.
Edit: Yeah, I figured the donation was mentioned in the video. Where that money went was not.

From what I heard on the news, the people who volunteered to be hotspots were given 20 dollars a day for it.

Re: 42 - Carcinogen Cola
As I understand it, the company paid them $20 and gave them the hotspot, then any money given to them for access was theirs, $2 for access was the suggestion but whatever they charged they charged. Not that it makes it any less weird but its kinda like a strictly commissioned sales job, you get nothing unless you sell a car/insurance/sofa... I suspect calling it "homeless hotspots" is what made it an issue.
