The Year in Music?

Postby Graham » 01 Jan 2007, 16:28

Here it is again. Sorry about that.
It got left behind the jam and we forgot about it.

I didn't think we'd be getting a Whatever Thing due to the holiday and everything.

Neato!

Didn't Kathleen and Jer do several of the things Graham disparaged in the "The Rant" about music?

Indeed they did. Being somewhat of a music snob myself I have two things to add.

1. Muse Sucks
and B. Tokyo Police Club should be # 1.

Indeed they did.

Really they were more making fun of Pitchfork, but they weren't lording over you with their music opinions like the subjects of my rant do.

I kinda like Muse, but they are unquestionably Kathleen's favourite band ever, and what is a music review if not personal opinion?

Various thoughts:

I love that Paul just sits there like the God of Zen.

Speaking of music, the tune at the beginning with the cat and the absence of Morgan is the same that accompanied the shots of the evil food stores in "Serious Cravings", right?

Kathleen, you're wrong. The Crane Wife is the best album of the year. Number 4? The hell?

Also, that was highly entertaining.

Also, Paul needs to talk louder. I had the volume on my lap top up all the way and I had to listen to his line 3 times (putting my ear right up to the speaker the last time) to figure out what the heck he was saying.

I thought the sissy-fights were awesome, too, because that is the chief way my best friend and I solve arguments. It really works!

Excuse me...

What are the necklaces referring to? Or is that not something we talk about?

Yeah I thought I should just add my own snobbery. But seriously Tokyo Police Club rocks really hard.

Ok, I truly enjoyed this one. It was GREAT. I think the rest of the LRR should get involved with this. How about you include Bill, Matt, and James in the next one?

I'd just like to point out that I very much like the Crane Wife AND Silent Shout by the Knife, but it's funnier to disagree on things like that, and to make mad fun of good, but somewhat strange electronic music.

Also, if one judges a top ten albums of the year by the music they enjoyed the most, the new Muse is a well chosen choice. While not their best album, Black Holes and Revelations is a popular album. Anyhow, since I am a complete indie snob:
Muse, I liked them before you had even heard of them.*

This snobbery not applicable in the UK.

the only bad thing about this is, that none of those bands would be in my top ten, not saying that they are bad or anything like that, just saying that everyone has different tastes in music thus meaning this list is useless to me.. :P

My choices are based entirely on what music from this year I desire to listen to the most when I go to switch on my iPod. This means that really catchy stuff like Malajube and The Decemberists ended up higher on the list than some other very good music . . . like Tokyo Police Club.

Believe me, being on this list at all is what counts as far as I'm concerned ;). I love all this music :D.

Suprisingly I only have one of those albums, Muse, which i'm not overly keen on.

I like the ironie of Morgans New Years res. Do more "Whateverthing"s and not turning up to the first one

PS, I was wondering what happened to Paul's hand

I would argue that Black Holes and Revelations is the best album they have ever made. The production is clearly leaps and bounds above their previous efforts, and the song writing is far more varied and far less 'Radiohead-like,' at least in comparison to their previous album.

And I'd only call them pretentious in as much as they don't write the same shitty post-grunge bullshit that 90% of modern rockbands still seem to be obsessing over.

If you think key changes, accidentals and harmonizing in anything other than thirds means you're pretentious, I'd advise you to examine the world of prog, also known as the world of twenty minute songs where nothing happens. I hardly think Prince-esque dance numbers and catchy rock songs can be lumped into that category.

So, I watched the video. The Decemberists is supposed to be prog now?

I hate to say it, but I've heard the new album, and in addition to being totally awesome:

1. It has no songs about space.

2. The vocals are not screeched in registers only audible to owls.

3. There are no really boring drum solos.

4. There are songs under ten minutes.

5. It is not a concept album about the knights of King Arthur.

For these reasons, I'm going to disqualify it as being prog.

Also, I would have appreciated mention of the new Yo La Tengo, and the new Joanna Newsome album, which were two of my personal favorites and should be listened to by everyone.

For clarity, I should have added that 50% of the market share now also belongs to what sounds like your twelve year old brother screaming the contents of his Livejournal over a rejected At the Drive In b-side.
