Every OS Sucks
December 6th, 2010

Assuming your OS doesn’t bail on you en-route, head on over to the Escapist and check out this week’s video.

This video has been on our to do list for a while, and it’s good to see it finally produced. This video features the musical talents of one Wes Borg, (who you may have seen at Desert Bus performing this very song), our good friend Missie Peters stealing the show as Linux, and the crafting ability of Tally in the form of some awesome Windows earrings. Check this video out – it was a blast to shoot, and is even more fun to watch.

Then go checkout deadtroll.com for more of Wes’ (really funny) stuff.

Unskippable this week marks the series’ 100th episode! In celebration of this milestone, Graham and Paul have put together the Unskippable Guide to Cinematics. This guide is a treasure trove of advice for game developers, helping them to secure their games a place among the Unskippable halls of fame (and to ensure that Unskippable has enough games to let them run for hundreds more episodes).

Cheers all!

  3. Sorry to do this, but my inner nerd demands it! I will unashamedly say, this is a fanboy rant (I’ve been using linux since Redhat 6, trust me I know how much it used to suck to get running):

Well, I won’t deny that it sucks (because it certainly does), but getting Linux running is not really all that magical anymore (it used to be, and still is if you are bored and insane and use gentoo). You can actually just go to ubuntu.com and download the relatively obvious “download” buttons and get a CD iso and boot off it. There are tons of flaws (I still have to shut down the computer and pull out the battery approximately every 3-5 days due to a kernel bug), but at this point it’s pretty good, even for new people.

I won’t lie and say that you can be computer illiterate and set it up yourself, but that’s not really true of any machine nowadays, is it? I mean, if you ask the average person to sit down and install Windows, most of them would be lost too.

Anyway, the community is making leaps and bounds in improving usability since there are now more than five people using linux as their primary operating system, and hopefully, one day, Linux will suck the least of any of the OSs.

For now? It probably sucks the most of the big three (Windows 7, Mac OS X, Ubuntu 10.10), but compared to say… Windows 98? We’re kickin’ ass.

This ends a Linux fanboy rant. I hope that I have not offended any Linux or Windows 98 fans :- P

For those interested nerds: my current setup is a Debian Squeeze server with a 14TB software raid 6 (waiting to put important stuff on it until Squeeze is stable), an Ubuntu 10.04 laptop, 11 OpenWRT routers (WRT54G v4 or lower), and a Windows XP Pro gaming machine. ::fingers crossed for Steam on Linux!::

  4. I know its really nerdy, but I can kind of associate the different operating systems to different periods of my life:

Windows 3.1 – 98 = Growing up – End of high school (British)
Linux = Messing around at college (experimentation :P)
    Windows XP = 9-5 jobs
Mac OSX = Present, Freelance (and loving it)

Every single one of them sucks, i have more memories of Windows sucking than OSX just because i’ve used it for most of my life, so OSX gets no special treatment 😛

  6. I’m kinda on the fence on this one. I LOVE the fact you guys re-did wes’ old song and video. I was hoping for some newer references since these lyrics are now almost 10 years old. But hey, why tamper with a classic dead troll song.

Big Big thumbs up for the video..

small thumbs down since i like the original music composition better.

and FYI, i feel the same way about the old and new versions of chainsaw juggler too.

  7. Awesome video. A few notes:

    1. Tally looks freakin’ gorgeous, despite the logo of the Beast of Redmond.
    2. QC effin’ rocks.
    3. Google Chrome OS is a Linux distribution (as is Android!)
    4. Linux doesn’t knee people in the nuts anymore. I remember a few years ago when I had to make quite an effort to get dual screen and wifi working, but nowadays Ubuntu is far, far simpler than all other OSs. And I bet Chrome OS is going to be even simpler than that.

Number 4 is not a criticism, by the way. It’s just one Linux nerd spreading the word.

  8. This video had pretty good timing for me, since I finished the Operating Systems course at my university this week. Also I run Arch Linux, which is pretty much designed to not be easy.

  9. @Cutlesnap

yes Google Chrome OS is bast on linux
but if linux is Missie when Google Chrome OS would be her vallygirl sister who only know how to do stuff online.
