It’s Not Easy Keying Green

Trust me, if you’re a video person, this post’s title is hilarious. And I just thought of it now.

The first in our new campaign of “more behind-the-scenes stuff” is a video of all the effects shots in The Job, with and without the effects applied. Now you too, can see how it’s done!

  1. I wouldn’t have understood the title if I hadn’t looked up green screening two days ago. But I did. And I understood it. And I chuckled.

  2. Somehow, even when it’s just the rough cut, Tim vs. a Giant Lobster never stops being funny.

  3. My goodness. While I certainly noticed that there were a lot of special effects when watching The Job, I don’t think I actually appreciated just how much work went into it. I think the idea that this can be accomplished without massively expensive technology is astounding.

  4. Best. Blog post title. Ever.

Them’s some spectacular special effects. One thing I’ll mention though, the items orbiting Jer looked a bit “jerky” when they reached the edges of their paths and whipped back the other way.

  5. Good lord, how long did that bonus video take to make? The LRRcast is going to be fascinating.

  8. Great video and great effects in the episodes.
I’m guessing you used your new Escapist money to buy a nice shiny effects program the keying was amazing.
And as I film director and editor, I know how hard good keying can be, it’s been the bane of my life for days on end before.

  9. If these sorts of things are what is to come under the heading of “more behind-the-scenes stuff”, I approve. Can’t wait to see what the future holds.

  10. Ah, I wish I was that good at chroma keying… I guess I’ll just have to settle with what I can do in Edius. 😛
