Hey everyone! Tim here. We’re at Anime Evolution, and I thought I’d keep you updated on some of the things we’re getting up to. During the panels and screenings we’re a part of, I’m going to try to liveblog what’s happening.

First up is the LRR Directing/Editing panel. It started at 3 PM, but I’m a bit behind.

3:00 – The panel started.

3:15 – Matt, James, Bill, and I arrived to watch and help.

3:20 – Graham is contrasting the editing in a Season 1 video with the editing in Mercenary Solutions and Monday’s video.

3:35 – Graham and Paul are talking about getting an external microphone to improve audio quality.

3:45 – Graham is demonstrating carrying audio over into the next clip.

3:50 – Graham is talking about cutting down a Season 1 video from 20 minutes to 5 minutes, and how much it improved the video despite forcing him to cut out some really funny jokes.

3:55 – As per audience request, the panel is ending with a Season 1 video called “Ways to Make Someone Leave A Room.”

4:00 – And that’s it. Now James, Matt, and I are going to find a place to watch Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals. Graham is improving with the 404s tonight, as well.

Behind the Scenes: cHustle 09 – Growl
June 3rd, 2009

Hustle 09. LONGEST VIDEO EVER!!!! Oh man, our goal after the mind blowing length of episode 8 was to bring back the episodes to more reasonable length, say 15 minutes (shorter if we could) But it’s painfully clear that we failed on all accounts. So with a long video came a long shoot, with several different locations.

We shot most everything with Kate and the WCMLG’s the first day of shooting, all of which was shot in and around Oak Bay High School. Which is where a large majority of the pictures that I will be adding are from and hopefully Graham can add a couple more later as I wasn’t at certain locations.

No pictures from the first scene but it’s a brand new locations for you all to add to the ever growing list of places in this city we have used. This time around we were at the Oak Bay Rose Garden (sans roses) which worked out really well. As well the suiting up scene with Graham and Paul was shot in the Kabuki Kabs garage. You will of course recognize the area the rap was shot in as we have used that part of town in numerous videos and even other raps. And then there was of course the final scene, which while on the UVIC campus isn’t somewhere we have shot before.

All in all it wasn’t the easiest video to get done but the final product is something we can all sit back and enjoy, and we hope you can as well!!! PICTURE TIME!!!

Update: Added some more pictures from the LARP scene (thanks to Krystyn for taking a bunch) and corrected some of James’ typos. -Graham

Update 2: You WOULD correct some of my typos! –James

Moonbase 2.0 Part 1: The De-Crapening
May 30th, 2009

Posted by Graham

So, as you may know if you’ve been reading our various Twitter feeds, we’re in the process of expanding our office space by moving the moonbase across the hall. It’s a little more than twice the size of our current space–and still very much on the moon–and it’ll be great once we get in. But first, it’s going to require some serious 80s cleaning-up montages. Which is a luxury we don’t have, so we’ve been putting in the work.

The space was previous occupied by an artist collective/flop house/conpiracy bunker/possible opium den. Actually, of the myriad tenants that frequented the space, the one guy we ever talked to was cool, but that didn’t stop this progression:

  • Friday: Giant, unauthorized party with upwards of 300 people. Landlord shuts it down.
  • Saturday: Tenants pull truck up and start loading out things they care about.
  • Sunday: Tenants trash the place; pulling down molding, tearing out lights, breaking bulbs.
  • Monday: Rent cheque bounces, tenants are gone. We are offered the space.

So hey! Boon for us! Cause our current space is really small, which we discovered during Desert Bus.

But good lord did the previous tenants ever leave a ton of crap lying around, which I made a point to take a bunch of pictures of, as I just gotten a new lens and wanted to play around. It won’t really give you a good idea of what the space looks like yet, but that’s for later. Enjoy!

Behind-the-Scenes: Skeeterpellant & Stand-Up Guy
May 29th, 2009

Posted by Graham

Thought you’d all enjoy another round of behind-the-scenes photos. I snapped most of these during shooting for our last couple videos.

‘Skeeterpellant was a pretty quick shoot, once Paul helped Matt set up his 5-man tent. We put the dolly track riding up to, and into, the tent for a nice opening shot, and then I just pretty much talked. Had to shave my beard off too, and it’s almost come back, thankfully. Jer did a great job on the ‘Skeeterpellant label, which features a warning against Shreiking Explosive Diarrhea… seems like radiation is an easy out.

Stand-Up Guy was also a pretty straightforward shoot. I had been trying to figure out how to do the off-balcony-hurling, without resorting to a dummy, which always look fake. That’s fine in some cases, but we didn’t want that to be the joke. So I gave Matt the mission of stuffing my pants full of whatever he felt would work, which ended up being two pillows and a sleeping bag. Then he crouched behind Tim and flung the fake pants up at the right time for a smoooooth edit, if I say so myself. I can’t help it, I giggle every time I see it.
