Re: Feminism general thread

I like the way Paizo does it in Pathfinder books. They use a lot of neutral (or made up) names, and alternate between he or her. It seems like they just randomly put a pronoun in, as if it doesn't matter a characters gender, which is of course correct.

Re: Feminism general thread

It does matter what you wish to be referred to, no one has said that YOU or anyone else have to be referred to in a gender-neutral manner. I must have been mistaken. I thought the conversation was about using genderless pronouns exclusively for everyone, as that would not offend people. Mea Culpa h...

Re: Feminism general thread

This is something that both sides have to come to grips with. The near-neo-nazi MRAs are identifying as men's rights advocates, and the Marxist feminists are identifying as part of the feminist movement - and both have support. You can't just try to ignore them by saying that "they're not real...

Re: Feminism general thread

I wish to be called he/him etc.. Should my opinion not matter? If someone tells me their preffered pronouns, I will always use them. Whatever makes someone the most comfortable and does not cause hardship for other should be done (harm principle at work). Thus, whatever someone wants to be reffered ...

Re: Feminism general thread

Person A says they are an egalitarian. They hate MRAs and people who derail the message of equality they belive in. Person B is a feminist. They hate extreme views that profess female superiority that they call "not feminism" Why is person A not allowed to say the extremists don't speak fo...

Re: Feminism general thread

It's based on the simple reason that feminism is and always has been about equality between the genders, which means that people who call themselves feminists, but are more radical and want more than just equality, aren't actually representing what feminism is about. But the problem is, and this is...

Re: Feminism general thread

And regarding clothing and actions, I put it this way: Is it wrong to wear a 3-piece suit and flash $20 bills around when walking in a sketchy area? No. But you have to consider that doing so would make you more likely a target for mugging. The fault is still on the mugger. Also, the mugger is like...

Re: Feminism general thread

I think a fundemantial problem here, and the reason people seem to be talking around each other, is that there are different understandings of society. Some people see society as a collection of individuals. I fall into this camp. Therefore attacking "men", is attacking the person. There i...

Re: Feminism general thread

The reason LGBT rights have drastically increased in the last decade is because people saw WIll and Grace, and Ellen, and people around them who were gay. They realized "hey, these people aren't scary. They are just like us." This has led to drastic change and will ensure gay marriage is l...

Re: Feminism general thread

See, that's crazy. We finally get a reasonable looking superheroine costume and she says "DAT'S SEXIST!". The goalposts have phased out of existence with some people. This goes beyond feminism, into areas like religion and social justice. There is now a permanent "offended class'. Th...

J_S_Bach wrote: The prof claimed it to be further proof that if a woman wants to make it as a superhero she must look like a man or be putting her body on display.

So either it covers her up, and is bad. Or it is flaunting, and impractical, and also bad? What did she say would be a good costume?

Re: Feminism general thread

I guess does more need to be done about breaking extremism away from the rest of feminism? I am a conservative, I am very quick to call out bullshit from other people who are in line with that label. against a women's right to choose? You are an idiot. Re: Feminism general thread

I think a problem is that mainstream feminism (yay lets all be equal!) has been too reticent to call out "radical" feminism for its nonsense. The mainstream movement must be more willing to exclude violent, and exclusionary elements.

Re: PAX to implement "Diversity Lounges"

I like the direction, but I'd also like to see PAX itself be the safe space from the outside world. The attendees at PAX are inherently members of the outside world. Thus have diverse opinions and experiences. Most are great, some are not. I guess the real question is how militant is Penny Arcade p...

Re: PAX to implement "Diversity Lounges"

If the idea here is to provide show floor space to companies that represent diversity in the industry, that seems good. I guess the problem arises when you single out one section as pro-diversity, it necessarily makes the rest seem against it.

I am proud of the way my Avalanche played. A young team with heart is always a good team to watch.

That said as a Canadian who has lived in BC for a year, lets go Chicago, let's beat these greasy Canucks

"Starcraft 2 will not support multiplayer via LAN. This has been confirmed by Rob Pardo, VP of game design, in an interview with incgamers.com. "

I don't know about any of you but i think this is pretty lame. It is going to make playing it at large LAN parties with bad internet impossible.
