Competitive Cooperation?
Lots of games these days have cooperative story modes, but I'm not really sure how collaborative some of them are. Certainly a game like Gears of War does it well, where both players need to help and support each other, and a victory for one player is a victory for both. But other "cooperative&...

Re: Who's buying...
I got pretty close to buying it, but then realized I missed out on Bioware's most recent game, Mass Effect, and instead picked that up for $20 on Steam. Definitely worth it, I've had a blast playing it. I'll probably pick up Dragon Age if it ever goes on a Steam weekend sale. From what I've heard it...

Re: Prince of Persia: The sands of Time (movie trailer)
I'm not getting my hopes up for it. Certainly the Prince of Persia series is one of my favorite video game franchises ever, but the movie looks about on par with other video game-inspired movies. But hey, it could be good B-movie material.

Re: Serious Games
Re'ozul brings up an interesting point. That Clockworks game, while likely made to entertain native English speakers, is a good tool for non-natives to learn the language. It seems like some games are made with the intention of being serious and useful somehow, while others simply end up doing so by...

The death of the standard controller?
So the three major consoles this generation each have some new technology in the works that will allow players to interact more directly with games. The Wii and PS3 will have motion-detecting controllers and the Xbox 360 will have Project Natal and its camera system. It seems like all the major game...

Mine is a mug shot of Vyse from Skies of Arcadia for the Dreamcast (also Skies of Arcadia: Legends on the Gamecube). Not my favorite video game, but a very good one that remained woefully obscure.

That's what I'm wondering. If a car is the only prize, why bother entering again? If not, what other possible prizes are there?

Oh wow. I'd never seen 30 Minutes or Less, but after watching both now I can easily say these are among my favorite videos on the entire site. I think I prefer the full-motion to the still frames, but the writing in both is excellent. Awesome stuff guys.

Re: Diablo 2 Resurrection Thread! New/Old Players.
Oh, and what's a Ladder reset? I'm assuming they don't wipe all existing characters. When you make a character, you have the choice of it being Ladder or not. A Ladder character ranks you against other Ladder players and gives access to some Ladder-specific equipment, which in general is pretty swe...

Re: What kinds of games do you play?
This is boring. We should talk about something more thought provoking. Like, how women are represented in video games. Thanks for taking this in a new direction, this wasn't turning out how I had hoped anyway. Also, why does it seem everyone time a girl is involved, there is a love interest. She al...

Re: What kinds of games do you play?
It is pretty difficult to define casual vs. hardcore, but let's say..in terms of playtime. For instance, if you regularly play a video game for more than 3 or so hours at a time, you might be a hardcore gamer! By this definition, I still think it's possible to be hardcore with something like Peggle....

So I'm currently taking a class called "Psychological and Social Effects of Games" in my college, and it encourages students to post on forums to spread ideas discussed in class and see the opinions of others on the great big internet. My first post on this forum was in fact for this reaso...

Right then. So I've posted around a few times and suppose I might as well introduce myself. I'm Matt, age 19 pursuing a dual major in computer science and game design at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. I heard about LRR from a friend a while back but never really looked into it too much. Lately I'...

Muramasa: The Demon Blade for the Wii has been taking a good amount of my time lately. It's pretty fantastic. It's from the same people who made Odin Sphere, which I enjoyed immensely, and follows in the same "beautiful 2d > 3d" philosophy, which I am very supportive of.

Re: Character Identity
That seems to be my experience as well to an extent. Characters I make myself I have a lot of pride and care in, but I don't really think of them as their own person. For the second type, such as the protagonist in Persona 3, I don't really end up caring about them and see them more as a puppet, whi...

Character Identity
I've been reading some books by James Paul Gee about learning and identity in video games, and it's gotten me thinking. As far as I can tell, there are three types of playable main characters in games: 1. The player-made character, such as in an MMO like World of Warcraft or in an RPG like Neverwint...
