For everyone stranded on SP, I might suggest one or both of these mods: MineColony Mo'sCreaturesMod They do conflict, so I don't recommend using both at once, but if you do, install the Creatures first, then the Colony. Colony will overwrite Creature's crafting templates, but that's okay if you hack...

I'm having the same problem as Ael, but it says "Timed Out" after a minute or so. I'll assume it's either that the server is down or that minecraft.net is hassing difficulty.

On a note, it seems I can't connect to survival, and I just died very near to the spawn in the forest. People were around, so I assumed they've grabbed my stuff. As I don't know how long I'll take to return, I hope they'll keep hold of it for a bit :d. Thanks.
