Re: The Mixed Emotion Thread
Psyclone - I'm in a similar boat. I'm on a major project that launches right at the end of October, which is super exciting! ...but it also means November is gonna be filled with less Desert Bus than I'd like, replaced by much less exciting operational support.

Re: Arclight_Dynamo's Anime Frustration
There are more than enough people out there to recommend "first animes," so I'll stay out of that part. Instead, I want to address your overall points. Trying to enter a fandom like this is intimidating Agreed. For my part, I didn't think of it as entering a fandom at all (and I don't real...

If I can sidestep the whole religion discussion for a minute... On this history-making day, as someone who's not really a part of this, I want to ask something of those who are: Where do you think the LGBT movement will be in the next, say, 5 to 10 years? This is to look ahead not to the immediate f...

I'll second Omnilingual, though most of the suggestions in here are great. If you ask me, Papers, Please is excellent and some of the best Andy available, but it isn't entirely representative of the whole LRR catalog.

If you ask me, it isn't about firefighters, it's about not being heard. Think of it like this. Imagine you're at a hotel, and you're ready to check in. You ring the little bell on the desk to try to get someone's attention. You can see people in the office, but none of them pay any attention. You ri...

The article is a mixed bag, I agree. MYTH 1: Women are half the world’s population, working two-thirds of the world’s working hours, receiving 10% of the world’s income, owning less than 1% of the world’s property. Yeah, those numbers seem like an exaggeration. There's definitely inequality going on...

Lesson #1 about Seattle: It's stupid expensive. Lesson #2 about Seattle: No but seriously, it's a major metropolitan area, it's stupid expensive. Lesson #3 about Seattle: See #2. That said, there's been a huge growth of apartment complexes in the downtown Seattle area in the past several years (espe...

My two cents: CV =/= Resume. You want to make a resume short, readable, and pack a hell of a punch. There you're looking for maybe 1-2 pages tops, as a number of people have suggested. If you're applying for a job, you want a resume. A CV is a different beast. For some dumb reason I can't fathom, th...

Remember also, you only need to code a Bot so well as to know when something is outside its field of expertise But therein lies the crux of the matter. It's very easy to code simple algorithms to make a bot do something. It's very hard to make it take the decision something is outside of its normal...

Yeah, fast food is not a great candidate for automation or AI. The problem is that the food has to be produced on location, which limits the throughput you can justify to the number of people who feel like showing up at any given time. If they could produce it all in one place with a huge uber-assem...

Avistew, I like that test in theory. Unfortunately, in practice that sounds like the Bechdel test: something made specifically to make me lose faith in humanity over just how many people completely miss the point of it.

I submit that this is a false dichotomy. Egalitarianism (or humanism, if you prefer) is a philosophy. It's a moral framework for understanding the way society should be structured, the interactions people should have with one another, the effects laws should strive to create, and the kind of actions...

I went back and watched, like, a buston of sketches to refresh my memory for this. In chronological order: - Daylight Savings: One of the best early sketches, if only because I find "Septebgust" waaay funnier than I ought to. - The LHC: It's the sound effects, it's all in the sound effects...

I've always been irritated at people who talk smack about Final Fantasy X-2 just because it has female main characters and features "dress-up" as a core mechanic. I always thought they were missing the point and getting caught up on surface-level details. I actually played X-2. Turns out i...

Its worth noting though its hard coming up with a fair enemy in a real life setting; Even Nazis were still people. How do you make a realistic "lets shot people" game while respecting people as...well...people? This seems to me like part of a much, much bigger question - i.e., how do you ...

Re: Feminism general thread
-What makes feminism BETTER than egalitarianism or humanitarianism? Egalitarianism is a philosophy, and the same goes for humanism. Feminism is a movement that proposes a way of achieving egalitarian/humanist ideals. There's no discussion to be had as to which one is "better" because they...
