Re: Feminism general thread

When a radfem thinks feminism, she imagines taking away men's ice cream and chopping their dicks off. I want to interject here with a clarification. "Radical Feminism" does not mean "man hating female supremicist". "Radical" in this context has a very specific meaning ...

Re: Feminism general thread

I guess the best one can do is try to increase the middle of the feminism bell curve, so that the extremism that gives it a bad name falls further to the fringes.

Re: Feminism general thread

I think there's a lot of consternation about the actual term feminism and the movement it represents. I feel that this is because it means something different, sometimes entirely different depending on who is identifying with it or referring to it. When I hear about shitty things feminism is suppose...

Re: Feminism general thread

I think Prospero sums up my feelings on Feminism. It's feminism and not equalism or egalitarianism because it's a lopsided problem. If men and women were being institutionally shitty to one another in prescisely equal measures we would have a strong case for egalitarianism - but as it stands even wi...

Feminism general thread

From some pieces of discussion on twitter, I figured that moving to a better suited medium would help the talk.

What are your thoughts re: feminism? Are you a feminist? Why or why not? Feminism vs Egalitarianism, etc. etc.

The floor is open.

Re: Ground Zeroes Controversy

Yeah. I'm going to stick with what I said in a tweet some time ago:

"Metal Gear Solid V looks like it will have incredible stealth gameplay and some hugely problematic depictions of women."

Re: Ground Zeroes Controversy

Something I was thinking about recently was that not all QTEs are created equal. Some piss me off intensely while others I don't mind so much. I think the type that really tilt me are the "PUSH X TO NOT DIE RIGHT NOW" where if you fuck up your timing you start again until you get the whole...

Re: Ground Zeroes Controversy

I think I need to play more of Quantic Dream's games so I can know what I'm talking about with regards to them.

I always got the impression that they were trying too hard to make a movie and not hard enough to make a game.

Re: What is a videogames?

I just want to know where this need to segregate games like Dear Esther and Gone Home comes from. People say they aren't games as if there isn't any gameplay, but I say to those people "look a little closer". The story, even though it's on rails does not move forward without your direct in...

Re: What is a videogames?

Apparently I'm just going to keep posting. It could be that there are two issues going on here. 1. I think people absolutely should think about games and other media and how and where they overlap and what new things we can try because it will foster healthy growth in all of those spheres. 2. I'm si...

Re: What is a videogames?

Like, think about this: We call Duck Hunt a video game. You play it with a zapper on a NES, you blast ducks and complete it when the marsh runs out of birds for you to shoot. We call Game of Thrones a TV show. You watch episodes of people fighting and screwing a lot and cannot change the outcome no ...

Re: What is a videogames?

What I don't get is why people insist on forcing things into particular boxes and filing systems. You know we made all those distinctions up, right? It's just for general reference. The actual difference between all these things is a gradient and not a binary, but certain people can't stand to not b...

Re: Ground Zeroes Controversy

The short version is that I straight up don't trust Hideo Kojima to treat horrifying, powerful themes with anything other than hamfisted exploitation. Even if he *wants* to be making some bold, meaningful statement about child soldiers, torture, rape or anything similar it's already not working. It ...

Re: Dark Souls General

My beef there is that the arrangement of the DS2 areas is really haphazard, because rather than banking on players using shortcuts and clever level design they can just teleport. The zones are almost randomly clustered together with drab corridors and tunnels connecting them rather than being seamle...

Re: Ground Zeroes Controversy

The bits and pieces I've seen of Ground Zeroes and the upcoming Phantom Pain honestly look really revolting. I don't think Metal Gear Solid is the appropriate vehicle to be trying to make commentary on real world issues like child soldiers, torture or sexual violence. I refer you to Yahzee's take on...

Re: Dark Souls General

Yeah, as someone pointed out it's like different groups each designed a level and they just smushed them all into a loosely adjacent arrangement because they assumed players would just teleport around. It's just more of the lazy, uninspiring design that keeps making for a worse experience. The level...
