Re: Crapshots - Volume 4

I have admit I am kind of sad that I saw the video of the panel where The Switch was written as I knew what was coming in it.

Re: LoadingReadyRunning - A Fitness Endeavor for Runners!

I have managed to exercise four times a week for the last four weeks. I think I am going to fall off the wagon next week as I will be in the Netherlands for a workshop. On Wednesday I was quite happy to finally do a bouldering problem that I have been trying to do for months. Today I ran 11.9 km in ...

Re: LRRcast - Star Wars

Especially if you agree with the idea that the original Star Wars movies and the prequels form a ring composition, the ideas and plots of Star Wars films being recycled in later films is nothing new.

To make this election year even more interesting, Supreme Court justice Antonin Scalia, just died. Will Obama be able to fill the vacancy or will the Republican controlled Senate block any nominee until after the elections in November?

Re: Science Questions

Protons are about 10^-15 metres in size. Also LIGO has 4 km long arms; VIRGO, the European gravitional wave instrument, has 3 km long arms. Once VIRGO goes back on line later this year, it will be used with the two LIGO instruments to better observe gravitional waves. One of the main improvements of...

Re: Science Questions

Actually the changes in length are more than a thousand times smaller than the size of a proton. An analogy is measuring differences in the distance between the Sun and the nearest star to within the width of a human hair. To be a bit pedantic for a moment, gravitational waves are not the same thing...

Re: Science Questions

So today had big SCIENCE news:

Gravitational waves, a black hole-black hole binary and a black hole merger were all observed back in September by the LIGO experiment.

This is likely the biggest discovery in physics in the last couple decades.

My understanding is that many on the British left see EU rules as preventing the current Conservative government from doing anything too stupid. One argument towards Britain remaining with in the EU is that if Britain were to leave the EU, Britain would likely still have to follow many EU rules with...

Re: LRRcast - Star Wars

Besides the whole seeing exploding systems thing, the other thing that bothered me was the whole Starkiller Base eating a star. I had to actively suspend my disbelief by remembering it was a movie about space wizards because stars don't work that way. I really liked hearing you talk about the movie....

Re: LoadingReadyRunning - A Fitness Endeavor for Runners!

I am trying to transition into bouldering twice a week, running twice a week and playing indoor soccer once a week. The climbing and soccer are easy to motivate myself to do due the social element. The running, however, is harder to motivate myself to do. Part of this is the lack of good places to r...

Re: Doctor Who

There were few a cases this past season with characters not staying dead or appearing to be dead when they were not.

I can not say that plot lines about cheating death or straight up resurrections should be a surprise in a show about a time-travelling space wizard.

Caviar is produced from sturgeons which spend most of their lives in fresh or brackish water.

Caviar is salted to preserve it, further increasing its salt content.

I decided to stop off in Iceland for a day on my way back from Britain.

I just got back from going to see the Northern Lights. It was quite spectacular to see multiple wavy bands of green light moving across the night sky.
