Re: Battle of the Belly Buttons: Are You an Innie or an Outi

You can't really remove the "omg immigrants are scary" argument until you have removed the people in power who make it, as I said in the other thread. There are more imminent considerations here than who deserves your tax money more.

Re: So... About that Significant World Event that Happened..

"The pursuit of independence is subverted by craven self-righteousness unless trust in the other is evident." An axiom I figured out last night as I realized the concept of national independence has gone the same way as the Swastika: Tainted by the touch of fascism, now useless to democrat...

Re: Feminism general thread

Me, I learned most of what I know about feminism as an adult by listening to people. In chat rooms, in threads like this and even in real life it's not that hard to say very little and let people inform you. You've just got to be patient, and resist the impulse to make the conversation be on your te...

That'd be nice for everyone else. My country gets more pollution from Texas alone than we produce.

But nah, Donny doesn't actually plan on doing anything. He's just saying whatever he thinks will get headlines, as always.

Re: Limits on freedom of speech

The problem with punishing any speech is that it makes it easier for those in power to silence their critics. The problem with not punishing any speech is that it makes it easier for those in power to bully their critics. So we can see the question isn't if free speech is good but for whom. This has...

Re: Feminism general thread

We'll just have to end all the world's inequality and then everyone's words will have the same weight. This is something you're not supposed to say in our culture where you should be able to choose whatever you want to have or not have in your life, but you can't choose the responsibilities that com...

Re: Teach Me(et all) Your Religion!

I've been thinking about this for a while, and I don't see any conflict between religion and science. They're for entirely different things. To make a metaphor that's probably a little oversimplified, it's like comparing a screwdriver and a blanket. A screwdriver is a tool for building things easier...

Re: Teach Me(et all) Your Religion!

I guess most people would say the element of spirituality makes the difference; the belief in of higher powers, existences beyond our scope of perception or a cosmically imposed meaningfullness of things. My Humanism is somewhat religious in that sense. I think of the collective of humanity as the h...

Re: Teach Me(et all) Your Religion!

I'm a Humanist. I get a lot of condescending laughs when I tell people I believe in humanity, but I think it needs someone to believe in it. Basically, I want people to be able to be who they want, do what they want and go where they want, and I try to make that possible in what small ways I can. I ...

As someone in a country with a party with the sole interest of getting rid of foreigners, gays and women's rights, and has seen that party grow from despised racist thugs to despised racist thugs with the third largest number of seats in parliament, and polling at second, I can say with confidence t...

Re: LoadingReadyRunning - A Fitness Endeavor for Runners!

I should probably lose at least 15% of my mass, and soon before diabetes sets in, and I figure if I just cut candy out of my diet that'll get rid of 30-40% of my carb intake. So that would be a start right? Only I'm counting on our wonderful community's support when I'm constantly hungry, sleepy and...

It's been a good year for entertainment - Sandman: Overture concluding, along with Battle Angel Alita: last Order; Inside Out, Undertale, Steven Universe, Brooklyn Nine-Nine doing good stuff and, really, Fury Road I expect will stand as a high point of the early 21st century - but I have a mind for ...

I just heard this painfully inspirational song, and now you must hear it too . Re: An idea...Let's Nope, the video game

"Let's Nope" seems a bit inside baseball for a title in my opinion. And I figure Shiva would want a title that screams "trying very hard to be the scariest thing since Stephen King stopped doing coke", while also indulging his massive ego. Maybe something like "The Oliver A ...
