Re: Standard on a budget - No deck for gameday
I've got a couple of things that could be good on a budget, though probably not T1: 1) A RW Arcbond deck. The basic idea is to play cheap white lifelink creatures, some indestructability effects, some burn and Arcbond. This should be decent against most midrange and aggro decks and has a nuts matchu...

Re: TTC - Mailbag
Graham: "Summoniner's pact [..] not that great". Well, if one discounts the last modern ProTour, the success of Amulet Bloom and how much mana that could generate... It could cast Primeval Titan on turn one and pay 4 the next turn, so the pacts were often acting as additional copies of Pri...

Re: Dragons of Tarkir Prerelease
Aggro decks tend to suffer in sealed. You never get your deck as fast as you would in draft and there are a lot of bombs you can't deal with going around. Some of the cheap removal suffers as well, how good were twin bolt and defeat? Sometimes you get a pool that doesn't allow you to build anything ...

Re: Dragons of Tarkir Prerelease
I managed to oversleep and missed the prerelease I wanted to attend. The store offers a second prerelease and a parallel 2HG sealed, which tends to be a lot of fun. I get there and my usual 2HG partner has partnered up with somebody else for the event. So I wander the story trying to find somebody a...

Re: Where to go for "noob" information
Hmm, it seems you and your brother are sharing a Deckbuilders Toolkit. Now, I think a better place to start would have been a clashpack or duel decks (both of which have balanced Decks that help you get the hang of the game and showcase different styles of play), or the M15 sample decks, which you c...

Re: Sacred 3 - Fantasy Power Rangers
A comment on Kathleens blog post introducing this: Sacred was a really good action RPG, certainly one of the contenders for "the game you play when you finally had enough of Diabolo II, but not really". Some neat ideas in terms of mechanics and a lot of cRPG influences, with a lot of quest...

Re: So that just happened (funny MTG stories)
After burning the midnight oil at work I overslept for my A:NR tournament today. But I had discussed some trades with a friend and went to my FLGS anyway. Since I mainly play limited and he was up for it we decided to do a sealed and just went for a nice mix of recent sets, basically Theors block+RT...

Re: TTC - Fate Reforged & Ugin Boosters
As a netrunner guy, I can't help but laugh at the "let's get this party started" evaluation. For reference : Diesel is merely a staple, and Anonymous Tip is not usually played. Different games with different systems result in big swings is such effects. Well, A:NR is more of an exception....

Re: Mono red challenge
Tough in standard, though Bearer of the Heavens+Soul of New Phyrexia gives you a really big threat. The main issue is ramping, because you need a lot of mana and Generator Servant is your only real option there. 4xAnger of the Gods is almost a given and you want to add some additional burn 4x Perilo...

OK, it took me over a year to notice (or rather I came upon the other bit and remembered this sketch), but summoning Van Halen via Hot Sauce seems like a reference to Michael Anthonies actual artisnal hot sauce "Mad Anthony's". According to his website (http://madanthonycafe.com/burrnmag/)...

Gives you access to red for Empty the warrens, Krenkos Command, Dragon Fodder, Hordeling Outburst, Purphoros (just another win con for a token strategy), Some X burn spells to blow up your own Hornets Nest... AND makes tokens himself.

Re: TTC - FNM Changes and Q&A
But that's precisely why the banners aren't that bad. You want to hit 5 mana early for the scary morphs. If you have a couple of 2-drops they get better, because you can play your 2 before your opponent plays their morph and you can put down the banner and another 2-drop on turn 4 after playing your...

The Postmodern format
Since Modern is defined by the shift in card frame in 8th Edition. It therefore stands to reason that the shift in card frame with M15 should also be the demarcation line for a semi-eternal format and postmodern seems like a decent moniker. Postmodern will never be equivalent to a standard environme...

Re: Khans of Tarkir Speculation
Since the block isn't wedges, I'd expect things to go the opposite direction from what it took in Shards (where it went progressively towards 4 and 5 colors). So I'd suspect the small set to reduce the Clans to enemy color pairs and end in the second large set with a single color identity. That woul...

Re: Khans of Tarkir Speculation
The article referred to: http://archive.wizards.com/Magic/Magazi ... ily/mm/191 Now, I don't think "Elspeth's story isn't over" means anything with regards to the new block. I think they were saying "I doubt we've seen the last of the Phyrexians" ever since Urza block and the nex...

Re: Khans of Tarkir Speculation
The announcement says that the block will be LSL like Zendikar. A world where dragons are revered but gone - who wants to bet against dragons coming back in the spring set? And since Sarkhan is in, and dragons are important: New Nicol Bolas? Shards wasn't that bad, but they learned that multicolor r...

Re: Khans of Tarkir Speculation
Richard Garfield at some point designed a card type that worked like equipment for lands. I could see that representing defensive structures - either animating lands into defenders, or giving static boni. A lot of speculation goes into this being the wedge set, i.e. Bizarralara, but there's little i...

Re: Duels 2015
Some notes: The premium cards are semi-random. Not only do you never get cards you can't use, providing a cap for "unlock everything", but the ones you do get are predominantly in the colors you pick at the atart of the game. So think pre-seeded prerelease pack here. You also got one pack ...

Re: M15 Prerelease Experiences
I went 3-3-0 on my prerelease. I picked red, mainly because I felt it was the deepest color and opened a pretty insane pool for an agressive deck. 2 Inferno Fists, 2 Generator Servants, 2 Goblin Rabblemasters. I had 18 very solid red cards and a curve that pretty much ended on 3 mana (3 1-drops, 7 2...
