Re: LRRcast for January 2012
Another accent we don't have: pirates. Pirates just speak like everyone else in France. Fun fact: the "pirate accent" is really just an exaggerated accent of the West Country of England. One of the most influential early pirate movies was the 1950 Disney production of Treasure Island . In...

Er, putting more and more animals on it seems unrelated. Those other animals aren't a common derogatory term for police, after all.... Not gonna lie, I did go to a Mormon high school dance with my cousin once, and it really was just three hours of people holding each other really awkwardly and kind ...

Concerning Dwarves, Tolkienic lore puts them with a Scandinavian background. It has only been recently (i.e. WoW) that they have begun to gain a Scottish influence. A bit older than WoW, certainly. There are a few possibilities in this thread . Kathleen: If you like the hair color, keep it. I'm mil...

By the way, Tim's horrid pun at the end of the podcast made me lol hard. Same here. (Not to mention his oeuvre pun halfway through...) Did anyone find that AT&T thing Graham was talking about or did he scare everyone off with his tales of its terribleness? http://www.attlostinamerica.com/ I cou...

Hey, what did dragons ever do to you? :(Punching dragons.
I didn't notice the lack of poppies, but I'm not from a Commonwealth country. Are they typically worn only on Remembrance Day in Canada, or for a few days around it?

If anyone cares about the riddle, I wanted to test the crews physics knowledge. Basically, when you move really fast, time works differently. If a vessel moves at 10 percent of the speed of light, 99 seconds to you is 100 seconds to anyone not in the vessel. At 50 percent of the speed of light, thr...

Re: The Whole Story - Fire Hydrants
This is ludicrous! It's not accurate at all! There was never a steep decline in the dragon population, and certainly it wouldn't have had anything to do with plastic six-pack rings. (Even a hatchling's snout is too large to fit inside one, and a dragon could easily slice it open with a claw anyway.....

While we might complain about the level of corruption in our governments, it's by and large much more in the developing world. Some places are trying to improve, but Kathleen seems to act surprised that there's so much corruption in other places. (Yes, I know it's intended as a joke, but the joke di...

I noticed a couple typos in the bottom thingy-of-which-the-proper-name-escapes-me Overlay? And yeah, I noticed it too.... I'll admit that "Dagron" is my dragon misspelling of choice, but yeah that's intentional. Other typos: "Mwtal" (1:30) (presumably "Metal") "Dr...

How do you guys decide which Ask LRR questions to answer and which to skip? I ask because you skipped my question this time. If you've already answered it before, that's fine--it's not anything particularly important, I'm just curious if that was the reason it was ignored (and, admittedly, was vague...

Matt (and others), the philosophical puzzle you're thinking of has a number of names; the most common is probably the Ship of Theseus. (Also interesting is Hobbes's extension to the paradox, mentioned under the "Greek Legend" section.)

I was sort of expecting a Babylon 5 reference. I seem to remember you guys doing one in a previous Unskippable, and given that Bruce Boxleitner was doing the voiceover for the Tron trailer, it seemed to be a natural opportunity.
