Re: Feminism general thread
Yes, Deedles, those are also things I do everyday but they are not the personal freedoms I was referring to. it's Hobbes idea of Natural Law (A general rule discovered by reason that forbids a person from doing anything destructive to her own life and gives her the right of self-preservation. The la...

Re: Feminism general thread
As stated in my original post: "feminism helps us all as long as you think like us, act like us and just generally do what we do and have decided is the way you should act" It's giving up the personal freedom of deciding what is right or wrong, how to behave and how to feel and using an ou...

Re: Feminism general thread
Just to play devils advocate here, feminism helps us all as long as you think like us, act like us and just generally do what we do and have decided is the way you should act. Part of feminism is the feminist political/societal theory and like an society (to paraphrase Hobbes I believe) we, as indiv...

Re: Gaming General Chat Thread
It's a pity Nintendo doesn't seem to understand digital purchases. It's still the only platform that charges me sales tax to buy a game digitally, also all of the virtual console games are overpriced. The lack of an ethernet port is also a sore point for me and means my Wii U keeps losing signal. Th...

Re: Feminism general thread
By insulting an entire group you're lowering yourself in doing so. It's widening the divide of "us and them" it's one thing to view a video and get enjoyment out of it, it's another thing entirely to actively spread it through something like twitter. Both sides are simply hurling insults a...

I have a question about your sound board, does it have a USB port on it or are you running it through another box that has a USB? I'm doing the latter with trying to help my students but can only get mono sound.

Re: Feminism general thread
Speaking of representation of female characters something that struck me as being a little odd was a comment on LRRs Temple of the Lava Bears Ep. 1 where a viewer was complaining that all five party members had made male characters. The issue I have with that idea is it holds the belief that one gen...

Re: Feminism general thread
If those were my complaints about a media producer, I'd phrase them as "I don't like their style at all, and a few of their examples could be interpreted differently with additional context, but there's no denying they have a point." This seems to define grievance "any complaint that...

And everyone was okay with that statue? I remember a huge outcry against it and the company apologized for it. Also it was not used as part of the wider promotional material like the "beautifully executed" Hitman ads. It was only for the collectors edition, but you're right as long as ther...

Re: Feminism general thread
And sometimes there is only one game that illustrates the point that she (Anita Sarkeesian) is trying to make, for example: a Hitman game using images of dead women in suggestive poses as part of its marketing campaign. If there's only one example of something I don't think it qualifies as a trope.

Re: Feminism general thread
That was a very interesting article but still seems to fall under my problem with some feminists. The idea that you HAVE to be a feminist if you believe in equality. I don't think that I've ever told anyone they were wrong for being a feminist, in fact I like to think that I'm very supportive, yet I...

Re: Feminism general thread
In regard to issues I have with the depiction of women in anime and manga I can respect the opinion that some may have that we shouldn't demand change from media made in different cultures but I believe the world is moving to a point where we are a global culture. I'm a musician and I believe that w...

Re: Feminism general thread
However the vast majority games do not use rape to reflect a dark and gritty world (some do use implied rape, a subtle difference) but even in the video Anita refers to it as violence against women, which isn't necessarily rape, I think that is a small, but important distinction that needs to be mad...

I tend to agree with Gabriel Morten's opinions on threats delivered through the internet: they only have as much power as you give them. Obviously it's a different case when someone threatens you and has details about your family or your personal life. But when it's random assholes hiding behind ano...

Re: Feminism general thread
I thought I had made it fairly clear what the issues I had with Anita Sarkeesian's video that I watched. She clearly is extremely educated in feminist theories and she is making videos on a subject matter that I believe she has a passion for. However, I do not agree with all of her assertions (as I'...

Can't say I agree, but I will correct myself, tropes don't always have to be lazy writing, but often are.
I agree with Firbozz. The overuse of tropes, or cliches, is when it becomes lazy writing.

Exactly, but I don't agree with that statement. I don't think devs are sitting around in conference rooms saying "we don't have enough violence against women to get across the point that our game world is dark and gritty". I believe that it's a symptom of lazy creativity.

JS Bach: Presentation wise, fine. I tend to agree that she's very dry. I understand she kills in lectures, but her videos feel flat to me. The LPer thing; I agree, she should have credited. Cherry picking: This criticism misses the point. That there are instances where the trope doesn't apply, or t...

I read an interesting article on The Escapist this evening. Jennifer Allaway is conducting a survey regarding diversity in gaming. Here is the link to the Escapist article which can direct you to the survey for anyone who would like to participate in it. http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/137...
