Re: Arclight_Dynamo's Anime Frustration
Well, generally, I like things with good plots, good characters, and good arcs. I'll put up with anything for a good story, well-told. Even the stuff up there that I said I don't like. I do find this line somewhat ironic, given how you've responded to essentially everything not suggested by someone...

Re: The Runner Writing Thread
Some comments on the work posted (would have done this earlier, but last week's been a bit hectic). The Crimson Assassin The switch in perspective from Pheonix to Tannis in the prologue is, I would say, a mistake. Your goal with the prologue is to get the readers invested in the character, and jumpi...

Re: Civ V Multiplayer
Seems interesting. Not sure about this robot thing, but I'm game. Giant Mulitplayer Robot is a fan made service for 'hot seat style' multiplayer. Sort of like an automated 'play by email' method, only without having to physically locate and email the save files. It has a number of additional featur...

Re: Television We're Watching Now
I'd recommend this youtube video of what Britain did to stop slavery: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_NoWIZv96KU Best examples were as soon as a slave stepped onto Britain's soil they're no longer a slave. There was a big court case about it. And, they picketed Africa with only two ships to begin ...

Re: Television We're Watching Now
So this week I watched the 2-part BBC documentary Britain's Forgotten Slave Owners. It turns out that, when slavery (as opposed to just the slave trade) was abolished in 1838, the British Government paid out £20 million in compensation - worth around £17 billion in modern terms, making it the larges...

Re: The depressing depression thread
I want more than anything to write fiction. Everything I write is uniformly bad. Dreadful. I can recognize it, but I can't fix it. If you can identify what's specifically wrong with it, you can work on fixing it because you know what needs to be improved. Most of writing is re-writing. The first dr...

Re: The Runner Writing Thread
Nice. My real life writing circle recently broke up, so this might be useful. I may have something up in the next couple of weeks. I'll also try and link some useful resources. For starters, since so far everyone here seems to be focussed on SF material, The Turkey City Lexicon is a good place to st...

See, yeah, I can get behind that, I also think it's fair that girls should learn self defence and should travel in groups whenever possible. Is that ideal? no. but in an ideal world, nobody would have to lock their door either. Informing people about consent is great and necessary, but there have b...

Civ V Multiplayer
Judging from the chat during Cameron's Civ V streams, we have a fair few civ fans in the LRR community. So I got to wondering, would people be interested in giving some multiplayer Civ a shot? (most likely through Giant Multiplayer Robot , a fan-made pitboss client - although if it turns out schedul...

Why do I read articles about mental health on Gawker sites? And why, oh why, do I read the comments under those articles? Attach a post-it note with "Don't read the comments" on it whichever part of your monitor your eyes wander to if you're thinking about reading comments. It helps. Also...

Re: The Life, The Universe, and Everything Thread
The early Jewish cultures were geographical neighbours of Mesopotamia and interacted with a number of Mesopotamian cultures over the years. And there were an awful lot of years: Uruk was founded around six thousand years (4000 BCE), Jerusalem has been around for more than four-and-half thousand year...

Re: The Life, The Universe, and Everything Thread
I don't like the concept of having belief of Creationism as belief A and Big Bang with Evolution as belief B only . I don't see why people think there's this binarness. Likely due to sophistry, at least initially. If you present there as being two, and only two, mutually exclusive options, one of w...

Apparently, research is coming to show that depression is an allergic reaction to inflammation: http://www.feelguide.com/2015/01/06/new-research-discovers-tha-depression-is-an-allergic-reaction-to-inflammation/ I would suggest being very sceptical of this, media reporting of science being what it i...

@Memo These things happen sometimes - I don't anyone's going to be holding them against anyone else. Just a case of 'mistakes were made', as it were. I know 'try not to let it get it get to you' is a hell of a lot easier said than done, but still, it kind of applies here  I know how you feel. ...

the day will come when I must say goodbye but I know already that I am forgotten, so I look at this old rusted blade... I no longer fear that day but wish for it with every breath. Are you ok? Current temperature: too many sodding degrees C.
It is too hot.
Cannot sleep, it is too hot and stuffy. My bedroom traps heat better than a greenhouse.
This is only June, two more months of summer remain. Temperature will get hotter.
Pissing hell.

Re: Star Wars the Old Republic
Well, that's Chpater I of the Smuggler storyline done. Sadly, there's considerably less positive to say about it, especially once you're out of the prologue. A few good scenes, but the plot holding them together is vague and insipid. A few decent NPCs, but not the recurring ones. Corso is dull, Bowd...

Re: Papperslappen's (quite hard) Music Quiz
Ah, got tripped up by number 2. Never heard the song it actually was (I don't think the band had much presence this side of the pond).
I knew 5 was from a classic musical, but wasn't able to place it.
Anyway, it was fun. Congrats to Uno.
(maybe I should create one of these)

So, finished the Chapter I of the Agent story. The last stage was actually very well-done (even if you can spot The Thing coming from kilometres away). In fact by and large the Agent storyline seems pretty darn well put-together, beyond just being 'totalitarian James Bond in space'. Serviceable plot...

So I had some free evenings over the last week and, well, Farian (my agent) is now level 29-ish and some way into Alderaan. Turns out that liberal application of Suppression Fire is startlingly effective at clearing out most groups of enemies. My smuggler (Kiamina) is still hanging around the early ...

So when is that European referendum going to happen? Because that will sow the seeds of discourse. Supposedly some time in the next 1-2 years. Of course, if the last 5 or so years of rhetoric on the subject are any indication, most of the 'discourse' is going to consist of poorly researched fear-mo...
