Re: LRRcast - Workplace Accidents
"Asphalt", "pitch", and "tar" are far more common terms for it in North America (depending on context). The word Bitumen isn't unknown, but mostly it's something we're vaguely aware exists but don't know the proper context for.

Re: Canadian Federal Election 2015
Went out and voted at the advanced polls today. Really long lineups, it took me an hour to get through, and the line wasn't any shorter when I got out.

Re: Advice Thread
I'm in need of a new gaming keyboard, and don't know which way to go. The top three ones I've seen so far are the Corsair K70, Razer BlackWidow, and Logitech G710+.
Anyone have suggestions or advice on which way to go, or any other options?

Gary Oldman! Scully! Gimli! Mark Hamill, but he wasn't exactly a secret!
So yeah, the Citizen Con presentation was cool.
Twitch VOD link for now, should go directly to when the actual presentation starts (~26 minutes in).

Watching HPBraincase stream it, once you get to the harder bombs it definitely helps to have multiple people reading the manual.

Quebec will never adopt any sporting franchise (or admit to adopting anything else) from Ontario, that's just the way it is. Overall, comparing the trends from the baseball season this year to the same time period last year (April - October), there actually hasn't being that much change in relative ...

Re: Feed Dump 225 - A Rich Head Canon
Looking at the "Regional Interest" column though, you see Ontario being the biggest source of interest, followed by PEI (which could be explained by one guy searching for it while bored), and then interest drops off rather sharply in other areas of Canada (with BC, where LRR is, second fro...

Hangovers are terrible things, I don't know why so many people choose to have them.

That Star Trek residuals is true for the books too with created characters not appearing in other books. What about books using one-off characters from the show? I wonder how much Peter David would have lost to paying residuals, considering his Star Trek books are almost entirely populated by guest...

While 2-3 solar masses is required to get a black hole in the first place, I believe it's possible to end up with a smaller one. Hawking radiation, caused by quantum effects near the event horizon, means that black holes are losing energy - and thus mass. So if a black hole is in a region of very sp...

Re: Doctor Who
Each episode pays money to whichever writer created a character appearing in that episode. This isn't the same thing as having the rights to that character, but it is financial incentive to make sure that you create all your main characters. That's interesting, I didn't realise the writers still go...

That sounds like working the same job I am now, but at the workload some of my colleagues are already doing. But then, I'm selfish and lazy, so would probably quit pretty quickly.

Re: Canadian Federal Election 2015
The last time the Tories had a minority (2006-2011, with an election in 2008 as well), the Bloc was the "third-place" party with the NDP coming after them - a much more serious split in parliament than we would have today. The 2008 post-election distribution was Cons: 143, Libs: 77, Bloc: ...

Re: Canadian Federal Election 2015
Even with the vote split on the left, I don't see the Cons being able to pull off another majority unless there's some sort of major upset. At which point, I see a governing accord to be the most likely situation, as you said, just to keep the Conservatives out - even if it's just by a couple of sea...

Re: Canadian Federal Election 2015
At the start of the election through the first debate, the NDP was poised as the strongest competition to the Conservatives, which I think was the most significant boost to their numbers (followed by the after effects of their win in Alberta). With Trudeau pulling the liberals together though, and s...

He's only a couple years younger than Harper was when he first became PM. Trudeau just looks ridiculously young - but a term or two as PM would certainly fix that.

I wasn't a fan of the woman translator CPAC had, she seemed to be constantly out of breath and rushing over herself, which was distracting from the candidates. For the debate itself, I think Harper defended himself extremely well, despite being very vulnerable on many of these issues. Granted, his d...
