Re: Design a Card
Regarding the Phoenix, I actually wondered whether it would be too slow as-is; the tap to transform means you spend a turn without using the Phoenix as an attacking firebird, because he's tapped that turn. The 2 damage is there to make up for this, giving a sort of pseudo-attack on the transform tur...

Re: Design a Card
Draw step happens after upkeep, so an upkeep trigger won't work; control will pass at draw step. You could maybe give it an "at the start of your main phase" kind of trigger to untap it, but Vigilance just seems easier. Or, use the wording from Karona, along the lines of "untaps and g...

Re: Design a Card
I have recently been listening to a podcast called "Re-Making Magic" that is all about card design, and they had a contest to develop a Legendary Phoenix card. I listened to the episodes too late to get my entry in, to be considered for judging, but I did develop an idea prior to listening...

Re: Design a Card
Re: Fickle Muse - so your opponent would get her tapped, since you cast & haste attack to draw a card, leaving her tapped. Opponent untaps then draws, gaining control of a tapped creature. Assuming nothing else affects the board state, then opponent's turn ends, you untap then draw, and gain con...

Re: Design a Card
I'm not sure what the point of giving a creature indestructibility until end of combat is, if the creature will die (be sacrificed) at end of combat anyways. I suppose it gets past first strike damage, but how necessary is that? It might actually be more fun if you have the challenge of keeping the ...

Re: Silly Deck Ideas
These kinds of decks are right up my alley; I'm a very casual player, but I do love deck design. I tend to go for wacky themes that I then make work. As an example, I have a Sorob deck. That's backwards Boros - it's red white, attempting to pummel you with a soldier weenie army - yet it is mostly de...

Re: Design a Card
Oooh... just thought of something. With those soul counters, you could make a land that acts like a "land lord"! Do a rare or mythic land that reads "Lands you control with a soul counter on them have TAP: Add one mana of any color to your mana pool", or "TAP: Untap each oth...

Re: Design a Card
It shouldn't be a problem as long as players keep their lands and creatures separate. I understand. But the problem is that the game doesn't require players to separate lands and creatures in any particular way. What if you just say that Essence means "You may play this card without paying its...

Re: What nicknames do YOU have for your own cards?
Many years back, when I was first getting into Magic (and when creatures were so much worse than they are today), I had a theme deck idea. I was into techno music at the time, with its disco influences and heavy 4/4 beat... so I wanted to make a 4/4 creature beatdown deck. The idea was to try to cre...

Re: Design a Card
One thing that bugs me slightly about the Essence mechanic is the memory issue, keeping track of which permanents are lands. It might help if playing the card as a land requires that you place a counter on it (the flavor of what kind of counter that is needs to be determined). The keyword could read...

Reincarnation is a Funny Thing
Comedy lives on. Even when the comedians aren't quite dead yet. ..."Here, he says he's not dead! I can't take him like that, it's against regulation!" I think I might have stumbled on to something. ..."I don't want to go on the cart!" This whole LRR comedy troupe thing, do ya ge...

Re: Design a Card
What if you tie the activation cost to the planeswalker's casting cost? I.e. "When you remove a loyalty counter from a planeswalker you control, you may pay that planeswalker's full casting cost (including color of mana in that cost) and then add one loyalty counter to that planeswalker." ...

Re: Design a Card
I like the fixed lands better, but I still think that they might be too cumbersome to be useful. One minor suggestion would be to let the Level Up cost be colorless mana, instead of hybrid mana. Then, these lands become useful for color fixing, for which you might want to spend a turn or two sink ma...

Re: Custom cards - Playability assessment
For the land that produces Goat tokens, you really shouldn't be using "goat" counters to track the storage. The counters need to be some other name. Maybe "grazing" or "pasture" counters, or maybe they are "kid" counters. Also, the "Remove a __ counter&qu...

Re: An LRR Themed Magic Set
I like where you're going with it, but I think Cam's Scorn will have issues - what does it mean to "force storm"? Does that mean that a judge will have to review all your remaining picks to verify that you're choosing the right cards? What you might do instead is to say that "for the ...

What if Ash Beast didn't have defender but instead just read "Whenever Ash Beast deals combat damage to a player, you may sacrifice one land. If you do, destroy target land controlled by that player." Then, it becomes a bit of a read-my-opponent game, is he bluffing that he's gonna sac the...

Re: Custom cards - Playability assessment
I think Gulroga needs to specify whether it sets the creature type in addition to other types, or instead of other types. I kinda agree that leaving him "race-less", with only the "class" = wizard, seems fun, as he fills in that blank when he arrives on the battlefield.

Re: First attempt at making a deck.
You're counting the Banners as if they are lands, but that isn't really the case. They cost 3 mana to play out themselves, so you need to have deployed three lands already by the time you get to them. The advice about hitting 40% lands (24 out of 60) is there so that you can have a reasonably good e...

Re: First attempt at making a deck.
Well I see you got a Siege Rhino in there, so you're definitely doing something right! This appears to be 5-colors, which can be done if you have the 3-color lands to support it. But it really will play better if you can pare it down to one clan, and I think your strongest option here is Abzan. Thou...

Re: Custom cards - Playability assessment
Actually, when you play it (draft it) could have very different effects. You might try to throw others off by drafting against your theme, or you might get rid of a hate card that would be problematic for your deck. And you could put some bomb out there just to see who takes it, thinking they will b...

Re: Custom cards - Playability assessment
Ah- you're right; I haven't actually played any Conspiracy yet. Here's another idea: When you draft CARDNAME, reveal it. Beginning with you and continuing in draft order, each player selects one card other than CARDNAME that they have already drafted, and place it face-up in front of them. Then, beg...
