Re: Magic the Gathering: Ask a Judge

Got a reply via email from someone, and turns out there's actually a rule about this. Whoops. 109.2 If a spell or ability uses a description of an object that includes a card type or subtype, but doesn't include the word "card," "spell," "source," or "scheme,"...

Re: Magic the Gathering: Ask a Judge

I'm throwing the question into the Judge Apps forum for full confirmation on the ruling because this question is super interesting, but a quick call to my LGS produced the same conclusion that it would work. You would control Tarfire as a spell on the stack, and since Ogre Slumlord doesn't limit its...

Ahh, makes sense now. I was thinking the ability must be dealt with immediately and was trying to figure out what that resulted.

Re: The General Magic: The Gathering Thread

I am quite confused by how Canal Dredger is supposed to work. Each player passes the last card from each booster pack to a player who drafted a card named Canal Dredger. 1) What exactly does "the last card" mean? You'd expect it to be the rarest card that's still in the booster or somethin...

Re: Magic the Gathering: Ask a Judge

Oh, I guess we did get it wrong. I thought it wouldn't trigger as well at first, but I didn't feel like pushing my side as we were just casually having fun.

Maybe I should be more confident in my rulings.

Re: Magic the Gathering: Ask a Judge

This came up during a game of mini masters with a friend as we cracked a bunch of packs for fun, and despite both of us being judges we came to a half-assed conclusion because we were too bothered to figure it out. I think we got it right anyway but I just want to make sure. Apricot is playing again...

Re: The Magic Venting Thread

I hope the "collector" realizes that by entering a Competitive REL tournament he is almost guaranteed to be matched up by "good players" and it's his own fault.

Re: Magic the Gathering: Ask a Judge

If physical damage can be seen on the cards as a result of the shuffling, then it might be possible to apply an Aggressive Behavior infraction for vandalizing. Even so, it's not a case that is really laid out in the IPG. Your best response to such behavior is to just call a judge and request your op...

Re: Commander/EDH Deck Talk

I decided to finally take the time to figure out how I want to make the Marchesa deck, and chose to pack in as many creatures as I can that either already came with +1/+1 counters or provided me with many many benefits for having creatures with those counters. I took that massive list I posted in th...

Re: The General Magic: The Gathering Thread

I usually don't keep up with the lore of Magic, but Theros block really got my gears going so I decided to read up on how the story played out. So as of the latest Godsend book, it seems Elspeth has finally reached her end. Thanks a lot, Heliod. I would not be surprised if another part of the story ...

Re: The General Magic: The Gathering Thread

My usual store also didn't have a Game Day nor did they even have the challenge deck around for me to play with, so I had to go to another. I wonder if I can somehow convince the owners to donate a copy or two of the Game Day cards.

Re: The General Magic: The Gathering Thread

Today I just walked into a store to fight Xenagos, as didn't want to do the full Game Day tournament. Boy did he get wrecked, and I even went solo. I ran my usual Deathtouch Thorncasting Slivers as with every challenge deck and failed to find either half of my combo. Luckily the challenge deck faile...

Re: Magic the Gathering: Ask a Judge

If you have any requirements to perform at any point, you must fulfill as many of them as you can without violating any restrictions. When declaring attackers, you have a requirement for Bloodcrazed Neonate to attack each turn and thus you must fulfill it at the first opportunity. Aurelia having the...

Re: The General Magic: The Gathering Thread

Can I pretend the Siege Dragon is hinting at a Wall tribal in Khans of Tarkir? Maybe that's the cool thing WotC has never done before but is doing now.

Maybe KoT is a fort-building themed set and everyone plays tower defense. Somehow.

Re: Friday Nights: Hero's Path - The Mastery

Loving the little things I'm noticing on subsequent rewatches, like Cam casting Voyage's End on his beloved Nivix Cyclops so it wouldn't get hit by the board wipe. A fantastic end to the saga. A shame Deicide wasn't the victory spell, but a Voyage's End is pretty funny too. Also Alex's enthusiasm wa...

Re: The General Magic: The Gathering Thread

I can imagine playing something like Oracle of Bones and sacrificing it over and over again until someone finally decides not to give me the counters.

"Alright, either you guys let me cast whatever spell I want or I get to [insert sac outlet's effect] every time I hear someone say 'no'."

Re: The General Magic: The Gathering Thread

Being the aggressive player I am, I didn't think much past "all these creatures are just gonna flunge at anyone, not necessarily the one with the most life, because if any die they'll just come back again" while attacking the higher life total is pouring more gravy into a bowl of gravy. Bl...

Re: The General Magic: The Gathering Thread

So I tried looking for blue, black, and/or red creatures that entered the battlefield with +1/+1 counters or had ways to get those counters pretty easily after showing up, all for the sake of a Marchesa EDH deck. I found over a hundred creatures. This list does not include Sunbound, since trying to ...

Re: The General Magic: The Gathering Thread

Also, I could see some sacrificing engines being possible here, especially with Undying creatures. Granted, the wording means infinite engines are impossible, but hey. It's a start. Undying creatures with Blasting Station or Goblin Bombardment would work, I believe. I would also love to try and do ...

Tribute's reminder text actually says it happens as it enters the battlefield, so yes from the graveyard works.

You know what would go well in a deck with Marchesa? Clockwork Steed.

Re: The General Magic: The Gathering Thread

That later ability seems BONKERS. Use that with undying. While I don't think it would, does it effect itself? I believe it would, yes, as it would naturally see itself die and thus trigger. I'm thinking of the occasional card that would explicitly say "When another creature..." in order t...

Re: So that just happened (funny MTG stories)

After you cast Bioshift targeting the creatures, if any of them have heroic those trigger and go on the stack on top of Bioshift. The triggers resolve in whatever order you set them up, then Bioshift resolves. Since you don't have to choose how many counters to move around until the resolution of Bi...
