Re: Magic: The Gathering: Whatcha mean, there's no thread ye
Buy a couple of fat packs from the last few sets when you have money too, gives you a better base than just the core sets and Avacyn. I recommend New Phyrexia in particular - I loved that set. Problem with that is New Phrexia is going to be cycling out in a few months, and I don't want to buy into ...

Re: Magic: The Gathering: Whatcha mean, there's no thread ye
I've had some real fun playing with the new Plainwalker decks - just cold out of the box without really reviewing what's in the decks and how it works. Going to have to buy more sets to disassemble them and experiment with building new ones. The new cards are pretty interesting. I'm partial to Vela...

There are a lot of creatures that are disgusting when they're unblockable. Rafiq is a pretty good one. Phage is better.Volafortis wrote:Rafiq of the Many with Whispersilk Cloak is incredibly disgusting in Commander

Re: Magic: The Gathering: Whatcha mean, there's no thread ye
Yeah, if horsemanship and hexproof were so good, then Invisible Stalker would be amazing. I mean, unblockable is less conditional than horsemanship. Until you run into ways around hexproof and unblockable. After all, the easiest way to stop an invisible stalker is to make sure it eats some wing sha...

Re: Magic: The Gathering: Whatcha mean, there's no thread ye
I saw a rather interesting control deck on Saturday. It was a deck with no creatures in it, had no direct damage, and still managed to kill the opponents with damage. It ran Elspeth and Gideon for the damage, and either countered or used Day of Judgement to remove everything out of existence. I prob...

Re: Magic the Gathering: Ask a Judge
There's one card I know of that has a color identity, but doesn't have a color. Ghostfire has a color idenity, but is actually a colorless spell. It is a little bit easier to explain that it's big brother enchantment.

Re: Magic: The Gathering: Whatcha mean, there's no thread ye
I know this isn't the judge thread but I do have a side note regarding Doubling Season and Planeswalkers: They do enter the battlefield with twice as many counters as usual, but the '+' Loyalty abilities do NOT get twice as many counters on as a result of activating them. Adding the counters is a c...

Re: Magic: The Gathering: Whatcha mean, there's no thread ye
I still like the Pokemon TCG method for online. If you buy one of the more recent packs of cards, you get a code that allows you to buy a digital pack of cards. Sure, you still don't get your exact deck, but at least you don't have to pay for two separate collections. That would probably work bette...

Re: Magic the Gathering: Ask a Judge
OK. So let's say I have a creature enchanted with both Celestial Mantle and Steel of the Godhead . It therefore has lifelink and Celestial Mantle's unique ability. Which fires first? Does lifelink go off, and then that life given get doubled by the Mantle, or does the player's life double, THEN gai...

Re: Magic: The Gathering: Whatcha mean, there's no thread ye
Split a fat-pack with a friend and did some 'draft' with him (though he had to leave before we could actually make decks). Ended up getting Silverblade Paladin, 2 Conjurer's Closets, Terminus, Devine Deflection, Duel Casting, and the two I'm most happy about are Tibalt The Fiend Blooded and Sigarda...

Re: Magic the Gathering: Ask a Judge
There are actually a few destroy permanent effects, probably not enough for it to usually be worth putting indestructible on a planeswalker but sometimes it will help. If you're using Gideon, for example, when he switches to a creature he stops being vulnerable to damage but becomes vulnerable to k...

Re: Magic the Gathering: Ask a Judge
It'd stop... um... Bramblecrush , I guess? My searches aren't turning up any effects that are just straight-up "destroy target planeswalker" or anything like that, but there are some "destroy target permanent" spells that can target planeswalkers... There are 3 of them, plus Sor...

Re: Magic: The Gathering: Whatcha mean, there's no thread ye
What I'm trying to do is get a quicksilver amulet out as quickly as possible, because once that's on the table I can put big things down without the opponent being able to counter them. Actually, while I think about it, what's the best way to deal with a mind-controlled Avacyn? I can only think of ...

Re: Magic the Gathering: Ask a Judge
The only thing i can think of that can "counter" Quicksilver amulet's ability is cards like Stifle that says:Counter target activated ability. Stifle, Rust and Brown Ouphe are 3 off the top of my head that will stop it from activating. Portcullis has a good chance of making sure that even...

Re: Magic the Gathering: Ask a Judge
And 5 is a classic example of one of Magic's counter-intuitive gameplay mechanics. If, for example, I activate a Prodigal Pyromancer and then you respond by killing it with a Doom Blade or something, the ability is still on the stack and will steal deal one damage. That depends on how you look at i...

Re: Magic the Gathering: Ask a Judge
This could get interesting as they are more meta level questions. What are the top 5 most confusing cards you've dealt with? What are the top 5 most confusing abilities you've dealt with? Have you had players tell you you're wrong in a match? Did it get heated? I'm not actually a judge, but under a...

Re: Magic: The Gathering: Whatcha mean, there's no thread ye
What irks me most is when I get a really good card in my sealed or draft deck, and I never draw it all day. This has happened more times than I care to remember. Edit: Just seen CrabCore for the first time. My ears hurt. If only that Snapcaster Mage I drafted had shown up, or the Wolfhunter's Quive...

This ought to be a little bit tricky since I can't really link on my phone, but here goes.
What happens if I reanimate a soul seizer with coffin queen, then transform it? Coffin queen specifically states the creature dies. What happens if it's not a creature anymore?

Re: Magic the Gathering: Ask a Judge
So a couple of questions about Quicksilver Amulet : 1. Can Cavern of Souls 's second ability be used to pay for a creature brought onto the field using Quicksilver Amulet? I suspect the answer is no because you only pay mana to use the Amulet's ability, not to actually cast the creature spell. 2. C...

Nothing major to add... Except I pulled Tibalt and Sigarda today. This was after selling my Cavern of Souls for 15 for a Sigarda. So yeah, I seem to be tapping into some pretty solid luck. I sold my Temporal Mastery yesterday only to end up pulling one in another booster that same day. Really would...

Re: Magic: The Gathering: Whatcha mean, there's no thread ye
So, I'm looking at the ISD block deck that won PTAVR , and trying to turn it into a Standard deck to play at a local tournament this weekend... I hear it's kinda hard to pilot, so I'll probably fail miserably, but it'll be fun, and that's all that matters. Main problem is that the deck has so many ...
