Re: The Big Relationship Thread

If Desert Bus chat has taught me anything, it's when in doubt, panic. In fact, invite her to panic too! Make a date of it.

Boy, I was gonna encourage him to go for it, but considering those possibilities, it sounds kinda dangerous. Romcoms are serious business, after all.

BRB, writing hip-based Jaina/Tenel Ka fanfiction.

On second thought, that's an awful idea, scratch that.

Try bringing a dead horse to class. From what I've read here, that would probably encourage attendance.

Does the rage still qualify as impotent if you're using it to beat a dead horse, or does that make it potent rage?

Re: Science Questions

It's because some genius (Ptolemy, I think?) decided to start with a brightness of 1 and didn't have anywhere to go but up because decimal numbers hadn't been invented by that point [citation needed]. In all seriousness, the misleading part is the word "Magnitude." It should really be call...

Re: For the lols

What about the Pokemon that don't eat anything? Hell, plenty of Pokemon don't even have a mouth . Or what about Pokemon that are capable of doing things like changing the weather over the entire planet or warping time and space ? Not that your concerns aren't justified, but if you're looking for bio...

Re: Heartbleed Security Vulnerabilities.

Passwords & the like are part of the threat, yes, but that's small-time. Think of it like stealing money from a bank. Getting one user's password is the equivalent of stealing someone's identity and withdrawing all their money. Great, but it would be much more efficient if you could access the b...

Re: Heartbleed Security Vulnerabilities.

Here's an article on the breach if anyone is interested: http://arstechnica.com/security/2014/04/heartbleed-bug-exploited-to-steal-taxpayer-data/ On the one hand, that's a pretty big breach of a lot of very sensitive information, information that is pretty likely to be used maliciously. On the other...

Re: Heartbleed Security Vulnerabilities.

The problem is twofold. Everything that is stored while the exploit is possible is at risk. That means that even after sites fix the exploit itself, it's still entirely plausible that data had already been accessed -- and that means passwords, usernames, whatever. So true recovery means fixing the e...

I don't know that 200 cats qualifies as "functional." "Sub-optimal" definitely, but "functional"? Stretching it. Still, if the purpose of cats is to curb loneliness, then you could work up a relationship between how lonely you are and how many cats you are. I'd assume t...

Re: The Mixed Emotion Thread

Just finished correcting a paper about how literacy is a bad thing, leading to the formalisation of social inequality, among other terrible things. I am quite calm about it however, viewing it as an exercise in zen-level irony. Like I've always said, the perfectly equal society is the one in which ...

But if homosexuality is learned, wouldn't there have to be someone who invented the idea to teach to others in the first place? Now I'm picturing like 1920's America, where people are just walking down the street and then some guy shouts, "Boys can kiss other boys!" and everybody starts fr...

Aren't men's & women's shoe sizes different too? I assume that's due to gender dimorphism inherent in barleycorns themselves. Like peacocks, but barleycorns.

I don't think I know what a barleycorn is.

Age of Empires II was big for me. I think it was the first game I actually bought, and I played the hell out of it. Well, "played" only if you count spamming cheat codes and wiping out the enemy armies of spearmen and cavalry with cars that shoot bullets. What can I say, I wasn't particula...

Re: PAX to implement "Diversity Lounges"

I've never been to a con, PAX or otherwise, so I'm curious: do other cons have the same sort of problems PAX has run into, what with diversity and harassment and all that? It seems like PAX specifically is getting a lot of flack for what I understand to be a much more general problem.
