...I've always used the Metre as the standard unit. It is in SI, which is the modern implementation of the metric system.
A better example would be kilogram. Although that's just because it was originally known as "grave" (with a gram being a thousandth of a grave), but with grave also being a synonym for the title "Count", it fell out of favour with the French Revolution.
So decibels would likely be your best example then.

Point taken, kilogrammes too. I guess that's what happens when you let the French look after the standard units.
Perhaps I should begin a campaign to get everybody to use metres and grammes, so that for large masses or distances we can have gigagrammes and megametres.
