Re: LRRcast for Fighting Tourny
So half a month is the turnaround of a podcast now?
Regardless, glad this one went up at an hour where I'm not about to go to bed for once
The centaur in Mortal Kombat is Motaro, so I can see how you had him confused with Kintaro.

Pretty sure I updated that Jan 13, 2009. So...
Yeah, I use Twitter for the goofy pictures I see now.
Planning something new though! New and different.

You forgot James' newer blog www.homerow.ca which he seems to have abandoned mid-march.

Not really, you found one link whilst I found seven and associated details
Besides, it's not really "stalking" per se. Closer to data mining and colating.

I'm going to have to go back and listen again to that podcast and try to write down Kathleen's recipe that sounds very tasty. It's a pity that Kathleen doesn't put recipes up on her blog any more, she seems like a great cook and it's a nice source of inspiration.

My point of listing when their blogs were last updated was, I admit, an attempt to shame them into doing so

Then I should probably point out that Tim's last blog post on the one you linked to was August 2009.
I guess with Twitter at your fingertips on an iPhone, blogging becomes more of a chore.

This is in response to one of Matt's comments. He said that if it's a psychological experiment, they are under no requirement to tell you the truth. That's not true. If you're going to lie to experiment participants, you have to justify to the ethics committee that it is necessary for your experiment. In psychology full disclosure (excluding blinding) is the norm.

That's true, and while I didn't get into the details of justifyign the lie to an ethics comittee, I did state that they would have to tell you the truth after the fact, which is typical.
You justify the deception, decieve during the experiment, and then disclose following.

Re: LRRcast for Fighting Tourny
I find it interesting - and not a little amusing - that both the questioner and the crew seemed to take as read the idea that it would somehow be bad if the researchers caught you playing with toys. It's an experiment; the right course of action is whatever you choose to do, because the scientists are gathering data, not awarding you marks for second-guessing their intentions.
If the toys look fun, and you have nothing you'd prefer to do, play with them; if not, don't.

These days I think with all my exposure to Minecraft and Garry's Mod, were I presented with Lego I'd start making some kind of boolean logic engine.
I don't know how, but I'm sure I'd try.

It's always the spoons! when I lived at home, my mum had to buy an extra set of just spoons because they went missing so much.

This reminds me of a study done by my school's child psychology and development lab while I was there. They disclosed everything to the parents, because they had to in order to be ethical. They had the kids pick out a nice prize at the beginning of the experiment (like worth more than 3 dollars). Then they did a few tests and experiments, most likely other studies that were going on within the department. At the end, they gave the child a box with their "prize" in it, then left the room. The child opened the box and it was a broken brush or old toy.
The purpose of the study was to see how children cope with disappointment. So the child was left alone for a bit and the researchers watched to see what they did. Then, after a few minutes, the researcher came in with the toy they had picked out, saying they were sorry to the child and explaining that somehow they picked up the wrong box outside but the child was still getting their prize.
This was ethical because no real harm was being done emotionally, because temporary disappointment isn't damaging, especially if the researchers rectify the situation to make the child happy again. So like Matt said, justify the ethics of the lie, deceive the subject, reveal the truth. Only in this case, the parents were in on the deception.

Re: LRRcast for Fighting Tourny
I was shouting so much at the beginning because I found it painful at the Mortal Kombat talk. I feel really stupid for saying to my screen 'Motoro was a Centaur and that Kintaro and Goro were Shokan'.
The most unique, nicest, and confusing individual you will get to know. Don't be stupid around me, that's my job.

The zucchini salad Kathleen described here I totally made when she first posted it on her Twitter long ago, and I have to say you guys, it is fantastic. I ate the shit out of that salad. Like, I swear I consumed two whole zucchinis in one sitting.
