I would agree with that, Vigafre. I had my speakers turned up louder than I normally would. But on the other hand, I really liked that the sound was more consistent (no straining to hear what some people had to say while other people were very loud), so I would call that a win on the whole.

That is true. I just thought I'd mention it in case it was a simple fix.

Okay, well, the board was balanced nicely, so that'll be the input volume of the computer.

In other words, an easy fix!

Glad to see the LRRCast return, especially since I lack a quality podcast that is released on weekends. I think James' Wizard Chat or James's Wizard Advice Chat is an alright name for the magic podcast even if I won't be listening to it. Also, I think Matt should do a Mattcast on the fifth week.

Hey, what if the undecided Podcast was done Talk-Show style where the big screen in the middle was used to Skype in (or video-chat with another program) various guests like Matt, or a famous person, or a lucky forum contest winner who submitted the best Contest Thing, etc.? And you could call it "LRRView" or "Coffee Time with LRR" or "SkypeLRR" or "Beards! Beards! Beards!" (I actually loved that one since I saw you post it on your Tumblr, Graham). Oh, actually if you get a touch-screen to do it, you can finally use "Mystery Touching, with Graham"!

I agree with this. I also vote against Magic Chat.
I pretty much have no clue what to put here.

In fear of poop-wrath from Kathleen von Poopsmith IV (long story.. XD), I am.. Okay with "Wizard Chat". But for that to be the name, everyone involved in the podcast is required to wear wizard robes and hats. We all know LRR has hats. They are the Team Fortress 2 of sketch comedy.

..Pretty much anything else, I've already rambled on about on ze Twitters.. So.. TIME TO GO BACK TO SPACE NOW. *jetpacks*

EDIT: Oh, right. I did have one other thing to add! Other than Card Kingdom sponsoring the live MtGO drafts and (possibly?) the Magic podcast.. You guys have pretty much been steadfast about doing this stuff yourself, without sponsors. I'm.. Really impressed! Much respect, especially when other podcasts tend to make the excuse that podcasts are "expensive to make" and therefore require sponsors.. Recording people talking doesn't exactly cost that much, especially with the amount of technology we have for it these days! RoosterTeeth, as cool as their content is, don't seem to comprehend that.. Now they interrupt what was a fairly good flowing conversation and jam a sponsor plug in the middle. Stuff like Nerdist and Marc Maron's WTF podcasts.. I guess they have a lot more effort that needs to go in to book big name guests and such, but still, any sponsors get mentioned at the start and (sometimes) at the end, never in the middle.
Bottom line, I absolutely love that LRR seems to prefer the DIY approach. There's a much cooler personal vibe to it, makes for an enjoyable listening/viewing time.

I feel like, at the very least, you might not be factoring opportunity cost into that assessment.

Anyways, great to see a LRRcast up and muchly looking forward to regularly scheduled LRR programming. :D

Eh.. I've seen plenty of podcasts literally done for free brilliantly. There's not much else to it, really..

Look, if the Magic podcast isn't going to be called "Wizard Chat", then the undecided fourth podcast has to at least be called "Mystery Touching, with Graham".

Or they could resurrect Jer's old idea, call the unnamed podcast "'Mancers" and have the whole thing be about necromancy!

I like all these podcast names, Wizard Chat, Beards! Beards! Beards!, Mystery Touching with Graham, Mancers. We should really just put it to a vote and pick one. :)

I feel like you don't realize how expensive bandwidth costs. The Bombcast spends close to $10000 a week to serve the podcast to their listeners. That's part of the reason that Giant Bomb had to sell to CBS and it'll probably get advertising on the podcast at some point this year.

I realize that LRR isn't as popular as The Bombcast and they never will be but they still have to pay to serve the data and as it stands there is no revenue generated from doing so.

(Not to mention editing and actually paying people... welcome to my pet peeve, everyone on the Internet assuming everything should be free.)

Cool guys, thanks for the new 'cast!

About Wizard Chat (its de facto name for now), will it be in a different 'stack' or a separate podcast from the usual LRRCast stack? That would be so those that don't want to hear it (ahem), can avoid it, and those that like MtG but aren't necessarily LRR fans can hear it without stumbling on to video discussion.

As for the fourth podcast, just you guys having a funny conversation, maybe with guests, would be fun and funny. That's all my favorite podcast, Jordan Jesse Go! is, after all. It should be easier to do well since with separate mikes you can jump on one another (verbally) a lot easier.

Oh yeah, and I too found it quiet.

1: No LRR at PAX AUS makes me sad, but I understand. TBh, though, I think PAX AUS will fail the way so many Oz cons do for the same reason; it's just too far away from the US.

2: I totally support Wizard Chat. BOSS NAME.

Regarding podcast expense, we spent about $1000 on gear. Those mics are $110 each, and the board was $400, plus all the cables and stands etc.
That's just the physical gear.

It's not... cheap to get a quality podcast.

As soon as the new podcast was up and I saw those mics all I could think was "Man that must have cost some money." I can't speak for everyone else but I'm glad you guys invested in the new equipment. The audio quality was definitely allot better and clearer and it was really noticeable in GPLP when they came back as well.

Love the new format and equipment. It was nice to be able to just have this play in the background and listen. Only one comment and that is Paul may need to speak up a bit more or raise the level on his mic. There were times he was too soft.

I didn't notice anyone as to quite, but I also listen with headphones with max volume to drown out "annoying background noise."

I felt like Kathleen and Paul were both not so much quiet, as more prone to turn away from the mic to talk to someone else. Meanwhile Graham and James were able to face both the camera and everyone else the whole time, so didn't have that problem. I'm not sure how to fix this without having Kathleen and Paul's backs to the camera.

My big criticism: it looked like the camera was mounted on the table, so it would shake a tiny bit anytime someone picked up or put down their arms. Is it possible to have the camera on a floor-mounted tripod with your current setup?

Also Graham, you pretty much had my name right, but then gave up. ;) I spell out the letters "U-N-H", then the rest is pronounced "CHAH-boh". I basically use "UNH" like a clan tag, so you can just call me "chabo".

For those confused by the whole LRRCast schedule, I threw together a calendar that you should be able to throw into your favourite scheduling tool. Some names may or may not be placeholders.

[edit] Google link for those who don't have a way of viewing ICS files.
