The problem is that in the latest version of phpBB, long urls are automatically shortened to conserve space in the post. However if you attempt to edit or quote a post with a shortened link, what goes into the reply/edit box is shortened display link, which is broken due to the missing characters. Using the [url=] tags generally avoids that though.
