I don't know if Canada as a whole is expensive but Victoria has a very high cost of living compared to most places.

Speaking from Edmonton, Japan looks a lot less expensive than where I am now. The prices cited by Graham and Kathleen seem to be on par or much less than you'd pay here (or Saskatoon, or Winnipeg, or Calgary) for an equivalent product.

That said, I'm sure that housing is way more expensive, and eating out at anything that isn't 'fast food' (not getting food from corner stores, raman, etc) is probably rather pricey and we just haven't had many examples on these vlogs.
